Israel to issue badges as proof of vaccination

JERUSALEM (AP) â€” Israel unveiled a plan on Saturday to allow people who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus to attend cultural events, fly abroad and go to health clubs and restaurants.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the plan at a news conference on Saturday night, saying those who have been vaccinated will be able to download the â€œgreen badgeâ€ in the coming days.

â€œThe green badge is gradually opening up the country,â€ Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu said the government could not keep unvaccinated residents from places like medical clinics, pharmacies and supermarkets. But he said other services would be allowed only for those who have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

I'll go against the grain here.

The Jews are (as an ethnic group) have the highest group intelligence on Earth.
They've also attained the highest national vaccination rate in the world.

If they regard this "green label" method as the quickest way to re-open things, and don't seem particularly afraid of "the old implications", why should we be afraid of doing it as well...?

Such a difference a year makes! Beginning of last year, I was feeling positive about things. It's now very difficult to feel positive about the future.

Israel's parliament passed a law Wednesday allowing the government to share the identities of people not vaccinated against the coronavirus with other authorities, raising privacy concerns for those opting out of inoculation.

The measure, which passed with 30 votes for and 13 against, gives local governments, the director general of the education ministry and some in the welfare ministry the right to receive the names, addresses and phone numbers of unvaccinated citizens.

The objective of the measure -- valid for three months or until the Covid-19 pandemic is declared over -- is "to enable these bodies to encourage people to vaccinate by personally addressing them", a parliament statement said.

That too has raised concerns about unequal access for those exercising their right to not be vaccinated.

During debate on the measure, Labor party leader Merav Michaeli accused right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of "denying citizens their right to the privacy of their medical information".

The statement from the parliament, or Knesset, said the personal information cannot be used for any purpose other than encouraging people to be vaccinated.

I just received notice that my driver's license is up for renewal. I was wondering if I opt for the "federal" DL - the one we supposedly need to board an airplane - will they ultimately require me to waive HIPAA protection in order to share my vaccine status with TSA, FAA and anyone who wants to know?
