Bob Dole has stage 4 lung cancer
By Tal Axelrod - 02/18/21 10:44 AM EST

Former Republican senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole announced Thursday that he has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

The 97-year-old Kansan said in a statement he was diagnosed “recently” and will start treatment on Monday.

“While I certainly have some hurdles ahead, I also know that I join millions of Americans who face significant health challenges of their own,” he said in a statement.

97 is a good long run. I'm not certain Sen Dole has been all there for quite awhile now.

Remember back when Time magazine pasted his face on a cover, asking whether he was too old to be President?  He was 72 at the time.  Bill Clinton has resembled a zombie for several years.  I had nineties classmates who declared him the GOAT ... maybe I should circle back & see what they think now.

Back in '95 I had a business trip to northern Virgina, had a rare mid week day off, and visited the Capitol and DC.  Back in those days, you could  just easily stroll into the gallery of the Capitol. I was in awe of watching Dole and others conducting business at an exact location that  had been taken at the exact location for about 175 years.

Back in those days we had some politcal fights, but at least it seem the cast of characters has some deceny. The joint now is now manned with a cesspool of excrement.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

No matter what I might think of a person politically, I don't wish cancer on anyone.

I watched Dole and Bird conducting business from the gallery in a nearly empty senate chamber back in the eighties. I did not realize until then he had a debilitating war wound.

I remember the pen.

Quote
...“I eventually discovered that by holding a pen in the hand, grasping it between my thumb and forefinger and wrapping the remaining three fingers around the shaft of the pen, I made the hand appear normal,” he writes. “For nearly six decades now, if you've seen me on the political campaign trail, in the U.S. Senate, in an interview, joking with Jay Leno on television, in a commercial, visiting with our troops, or anywhere, you've perhaps noticed that the pen is always there. It has become a part of my right arm."...

Sad.

97 is indeed a good run. I'm surprised Sen. Dole is pursuing treatment. I knew younger men (age 80 or so) who decided it wasn't worth it at their age.

I doubt he is making any decisions in regard to his care.

Plus, not to sound callous, there is money to be made by the physicians involved.  Chemo has a very nice payout, as does radiation.  It is about the $$$.  All day long, and not the wellbeing of the patient!

Speaking as someone who has gone though chemo and radiation,I'm surprised, too. The treatment is enough to kill you if the cancer doesn't. I honestly don't know if I would have even taken the treatment if I had known what it was going to do to me,and I am a LOT younger than Bob Dolt.

Don't get me wrong. I will NEVER tell someone with cancer to not get the treatment,or tell them what it does to you. Different people react in different ways to the same treatment, and my bad experiences may have been due to MY individual body chemistry, the type of cancer I have,a combination of the two,or any other unknown factor.

If someone wants to take it,good for them and i wish them well.

Hell,if/when the cancer comes back I will probably take anything they give me,working under the theory I no longer have much for it to take away from me. Truth to tell,if they killed any more brain cells I wouldn't know if I was harmed or not.

I have gone through 4 months of Chemo and 7 weeks of radiation.  Then they wanted to do it AGAIN!  I was lymph node negative and even with doing nothing, I only had 10% chance of new cancer.  I SAID,  NO.  I would do CHEMO again but not radiation.  That burned the tip of my lung, heart, and destroyed my thyroid.  Who knows what else.  Radiation can give someone cancer.

I might have some issues with some of Dole's positions, but anyone who ate MG 42 bullets in Italy while wearing the country's uniform has my respect and gratitude.

My patriotism died when Clinton was re-elected over Dole in '96.  I never pledged allegiance again and to this day still have not.

Yes. I thought he was already gone.  Stage 4?  A few months to go.

My father in law was dxd with terminal cancer at 87 and his Dr. advised him not to go through chemo.  He lived another 6 years.  The dr. told him at his age he would not survive the treatment nor surgery.  He was right.
