This article is dated by a few days, but the story is too cute not to post!

This 4-Year-Old Went Outside To Play, And Came Back With A New Friend

A mother in Virginia was stunned when her 4-year-old son returned from playing outside with a new friend. Stephanie Brown says she was stunned on the front porch Tuesday morning to see her son standing next to a baby deer.

"Dominic really went outside and brought a deer back...

 Brown said she was in the kitchen when she heard footsteps on the porch.

"I was like 'Okay, he's getting ready to come in.' So I turn my head and there it is. It's like a little baby deer and him. Like, it wasn't anything strange for him. It was really weird," she said.

"I couldn't even tell you, I was in shock. I was like, 'No way. My mind is playing games with me."

Brown said her son talked to the young fawn and told him that he has cereal inside. So, she let them eat some cereal together before making her son take him back to the tree line because "his mother would be looking for him".....

A boy at that age has so much to explore without his pesky Mom being there to to ruin his fun.   Having said that there is nothing wrong keeping a watchful eye on the little rugrat from a safe distance....out of sight of course!.

If this boy has a fawn with him, I think it's a safe bet he doesn't live in the city or burbs.

Nope, I did the same thing.  I went out with my kids at that age; and we had a fenced in yard.  You just never know what they'll think of.  Besides, I loved playing in the yard with them!

We had a neighbor who had a two year old who was an 'escape artist'...regardless of how many lock and bolts they put on doors or how high they put them, he managed to get out.  I participated in several search missions.  The little squirt even climbed out his windows (so much for punishing him to his room for escaping).  He was a squirt!

Cute story, but the boy could have easily been killed by the fawn's mother.

When my middle child was 3.5 years old, I sat her down one day to watch a movie, while I worked with a manager that worked for me that came to my house.  We finished a couple hours later, and I went over to check on her and she was gone.  Searched the house, all over outside, checked with neighbors, no where to be found.

When I came upstairs, the front door was open one inch.  It was late March and about 49 degrees outside.  I called my wife at the grocery store to see if she came back and took her, the phone went click.  It was late afternoon, and just starting to get dark out.  She was gone for about one hour that I noticed.

Now I should mention my doors were very tight in the jam, and I often would use two hands to open a door.  I thought she would never be able to open a door to get out.  Well, I called the police to report her missing, and the policeman said, she have blond hair about 3-4 years of age.  I said yes, and he said, I think I have her here.

She decided to go visit my sister, 3.5 miles away, walking and crisscrossing back and forth over a road with cars traveling 40 mph.  An old couple saw her run out in front of a car, that slammed on its breaks, and they grabbed her and took her to the police station.

My coworker drove me over to the police station, I go inside, and a cop was offering her a candy bar.  She declined as I walked up, and looked at me and said hey dad.  I said to her, where did you think you were going?  Cool as a cucumber, she says, over to Lee's[my sister, living with my parents, her grandparents].

It took me at least a week to feel normal again.  The empty pain was terrible.  Every night at dinner for about one month, she received a brief lecture about not going anywhere without Mom or Dad's approval.  I went and had deadbolts installed on all the doors, both sides requiring a key.

Another situation where it could have been tragic but wasn't.  The newspapers are full of tragedies, not of children that had happy endings.  I remember that day like yesterday.  If I were to give advice to a parent new to the job, I would say be careful taking your eyes off your kids, they disappear quickly.  This same child would be standing next to you in a department store, and disappear within a fraction of a second.  She would crawl under a rack of clothes and literally be gone, and then not respond to her name being called.  She would be 3 feet away and just sit there silent.  What a character she was.  I appreciated why some parents used harnesses on their kids.  The heart failure with that one.  She probably took a year or two off my life.

Don't live in the sticks neither... Because the dogs would have dispatched the fawn. My bet is McMansions and a gated community...

As for being outside alone at four... Happens all the time in rural parts... But like I said, dogs.

I just hope that fawn develops a fear of humans by this time next year.

@mystery-ak

Maybe his family lives in a safe neighborhood?

I was amusing myself by riding busses to nearby cities when I was 8  years old,and riding my bike back from football games at the local high school late at night. Of course,I have always been fairly aggressive,and I always carried a switch blade and a set of cast iron "brass knuckles" in my pocket,and  if I was going to be out after dark I added a Boy Scout hatchet to my belt that was sharp enough to shave with.

My trust in humanity has it's limits.

@catfish1957

No kidding about that. I can see the boy,not knowing any better, approaching a fawn to pet it,but have a hard time wrapping my mind around an adult mother sending her small child out to the woods again to escort the fawn so his mama can find him.

I can only guess she has always been a city girl,and all she knows about nature came from Disney movies.

It DOES have to be said that grazing animals like deer are not really aggressive because they never fight to eat. You have to scare one,and a child that small wouldn't scare a deer.

A small child running across a pack of wild dogs or coyotes in the woods is another matter,though.

Why shouldn't he be?   They're clearly in a fairly rural area.   When I was four I took a long walk around the city I grew up in....went like 10 blocks  turned a right, walked a couple of blocks, saw the library and fire house, turned a right, went back home.   Was interesting.   Parents got kinda worried though, I was going to be late for their bad cooking.

The US has to return to the place it was where kids could play outside.

The days of young kids playing outside on their own are gone.  As we continue to pack this country will illegal invading aliens, safety for children will decline even further.  Contrary to the image we like to portray, we are not protective of our children like we should be.  This nation favors the criminal over the child all day long.

Why not? We were outside (within earshot) when we were kids. There were boundaries, but we explored mercilessly. Rural area, surrounded by relatives, low risk. Urban moms have more to worry about.

Ma too... Again. with emphasis, with dogs. There ain't much going to get at you with several farm dogs tagging along. Even a griz will have to have lost his mind to go up against 2 or more dogs with a reason to defend.
