Biden Administration Is Contemplating a New Tax That Would Disproportionately Impact Rural Americans
Beth Baumann

Posted: Jan 23, 2021 11:05 AM

When President Joe Biden announced former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg as his pick for Transportation Secretary, many scratched their heads. Why would he tap someone who oversaw a small budget, in a small town, in the midwest for such a roll? That puzzle is finally coming together.

It turns out that Biden favors Buttigieg's transportation views, specifically the idea that America should move away from the gas tax and instead opt into a tax based on the number of miles a person travels. It would be a new way to provide cash for the Highway Trust Fund, which currently funding from the federal gas tax. As it currently stands, the federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel.

Liberal states, like California, Oregon, Washington State, and Colorado are already contemplating this so-called "alternative."

Biden's administration would have to figure out how to pay for his $1 trillion infrastructure plan, which includes $160 billion for the transportation department.

During his confirmation hearing with the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee on Thursday, Buttigieg explained his take on the gas tax.

"I think all options need to be on the table. As you know, the gas tax has not been increased since 1993, and it has never been pegged to inflation, and it's one of the reasons why the current state of Highway Trust Fund is that there's more going out than coming in," Buttigieg said about a potential tax increase. "In the long term, we need to bear in mind also that as vehicles become more efficient and as we pursue electrification, sooner or later, there will be questions about whether the gas tax can be effective at all."

Instead, the transportation nominee wants to consider taxing Americans on the number of miles they drive.

??? How exactly are they going to accomplish that?? Have each person keep a gas mileage log; like everyone in their right mind would turn in an accurate accounting.

Only a Buttgig could come up with this kind of crappola.

Oh, don't worry.   They will figure out a way to track every gallon of gasoline bought in the US eventually.   It will eliminate small business owners that travel a lot to conduct their business.   Unless truckers that deliver food are made exempt, the price of groceries will skyrocket.   Hey...it's a threefer for the rats!   Just another day in the "destroy Trump's economy" aholes' new paradise.

Wait.   It will also tell them who the evil holdouts are when they ban fuel-based vehicles in favor of all-electric.  A four-fer!

Prices of groceries have already skyrocketed and gas around here is already at $2.39/gal.

@libertybele

I see people at the grocery store checking out,and paying 250 bucks for groceries for a week. When you add up the typical working class person is making a house payment of more than $1000 a month, one or two car payments, insurance payments on house and cars, health insurance, property taxes, homeowners insurance, and has two or more children in school that need school clothes, school supplies, lunch money, etc, etc, etc,it boggles my imagination how they are managing to do all this.

And the numbers mentioned are low-ball numbers. The real ones, for most people, are likely to be much higher. For example, the house payment. My house has been paid off for years,so I have no real idea how much the typical house payment is these days for a couple in their 20's-30's with two kids in typical suburbia, but I am guessing a grand a month would thrill them.

It's been cheaper for several years around here to buy a home rather than rent because the interest rates have been so low that rent prices have skyrocketed.  Now they're talking about building areas of more affordable homes (I don't see that happening anymore). Anyone that is thinking about buying or selling needs to do it now.

I hear what you are saying; groceries are astronomical in my area.  I buy as much as I can when I'm out and freeze meats, breads and vegs .... easily spend $600/mo. for just the two of us.

You are right, I don't know how young couples with a couple of kids make ends meet these days.

(sigh)
Yearly vehicle inspection.
Mileage recorded.
As easy as it gets.

A Fishrrman kinda-shaky prediction:
By 2022 -- certainly by 2024 -- you'll be paying "mileage", "carbon consumption", and "climate disruption" taxes on your gas powered vehicles that amount to roughly $8-10 per gallon of fuel consumed.

This is in addition to the higher price of fuel itself (before taxes), which by then may be $7-10 per gallon.

Easier than that. Require a "gasoline purchase card" to be inserted into the credit card slot on gas pumps for every gas purchase. The results will go back to a company (100 percent chance it will be owned by a Dim donor or family member) to tabulate the bill, and you will get a bill in the mail every month to pay. Don't pay your bill on time, and your gasoline credit card will no longer work.

Which means you will have to then pay a fine and buy a new card at an inflated price to cover their "administrative costs". Mo money,mo money,mo money!

LOTS of money for the Dims to be made off this. They will get the contract to make the cards, the contract to do the billing, and probably even a contract to do the collections. Might not sound like a big deal, but just imagine how much money that will add up to EVERY MONTH if just ONE dollar profit is made from every transaction. How many hundred million drivers do you think there are in the US?

Add to that the foreign tourists who would have to buy temporary gas purchase permits, and pretty soon you are eating the premium cereal for breakfast!

Here's how:

In New York, the annual vehicle inspection requires the mileage on the vehicle be reported. So, each time you take it in for the mandated inspection, the mechanic would check the odometer, send it to the state, and the state would subtract the mileage from the last time you got your car inspected and send you the bill.

Wow.  Annual vehicle inspection?? That's craziness.  But I now understand what we are truly facing on this issue.  Thanks for the insight.  I have never lived in any state that required an annual vehicle inspection.

Yes I am so thankful for that 1.3% cost of living increas they gave SS recipients, the extra $26 after Medicare Ins. is gonna really tide me thru all the increases Captain Dementia and his Posse are dumping on America. Anyone want to guess how much our politicians are going to give themselve as a COL increase? And regular around me runs from $2.80 to $3.80.

In California we have to take the vehicle in for a smog check every two years and I'm sure that part of the information they submit to the DMV is mileage.

You're kidding, right?   Here in Texas we have it every friggin year.   It's like a hidden tax, along with the yearly "registration".  Leftists have left (pardon pun) their mark on Texas.   And I fear that mark will become an ugly gash once the illegals are 'deemed legal' by the rats.

Not necessarily 'only rural' people will be affected.
Cab prices and Uber charges will skyrocket.
This will affect everyone. Just more money out of the 'home chest' into the hands of politicians.
Which is the whole point after all, of course.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.

The only way this makes sense is if we really do go all-electric by a year certain.  Gas tax will completely dry up, and they will need to find a new way to fund the union highway jobs.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16

Nope, it doesn't make sense to me at all. Besides the revenue for highways and infrastructure has been pissed away for decades, more won't improve that.

No, I am not kidding, we don't have to have inspections on our vehicles in FL.  I've been down here nearly 30 years and that stood true even under a DEM governor.  We obviously have to have insurance, but other than that you're good to go.  If your vehicle appears to be in a less than safe condition you can get pulled over, but that's about it.

Another reason I have thought about moving to southern, coastal Florida.   I love the weather, beach, and now this.   When Joe & da Ho get done with illegal immigration, Texas will no longer be the free bastion that it has been.   Only thing that will prevent the move from Texas to Florida is the usual....$$$.
