Relying on Lockdowns, Social Distancing, and Masks Isn’t Working to Curb COVID-19

Doug Badger & Norbert Michel   |   January 15, 2021

COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to surge. The seven-day moving average of daily confirmed new cases eclipsed 260,000 on Jan. 9, the highest rate yet recorded. The U.S. is expected to reach the grim milestone of 400,000 COVID-related deaths later this month, around the anniversary of its first confirmed case.

These numbers suggest that the strategy of relying predominantly on social distancing, lockdowns, and mask-wearing is not working. We need better interventions.

Some have called for national mask mandates. We recently examined the effects of mask mandates in the U.S. and Italy, and our findings are not encouraging.

Of the 25 U.S. counties reporting the highest number of new cases during the current surge, 21 had mask mandates in place before August.  .  .  .

It doesn't take a 5th grader to figure out that Covid is running rampant in nazi States like California, New York, and Illinois.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

Saving Lives and Livelihoods

  • Pursue returning to work as soon as possible.

  • Talk with employers about exploring flexible options that will allow employees who are at risk, those who have certain health or safety concerns, or parents and guardians who are unable to find child care because of school and day care closures to alter their work schedules and duties or to work from home when possible.

  • Avoid commuting on mass transit.

  • Small-business owners should plan and revise their business operations so that they can operate in a reduced capacity while remaining open in emergency situations.

  • Contact a personal physician and self-isolate if identifiable symptoms develop.

  • Family members of people in nursing homes should ask what steps staff are taking to protect their loved ones, including whether additional cleaning, testing, contact tracing, and other mitigation steps are in place.

  • Ask medical providers about telehealth options in order to interact together remotely.

  • Pursue the full spectrum of health care services necessary to protect overall health.

  • Ask medical providers how they make triage decisions and confirm that they base treatment decisions on a patient’s objective clinical state rather than other considerations like maximizing “life-years.”

  • Pursue overall health through proactive healthy practices, including the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Parents should support school plans to reopen in the fall.

  • Parents should consider the best approach to their children’s transportation needs.

  • International travelers should take and record their temperature before traveling, obtain and bring health documentation indicating any virus testing and/or antibody results, and plan for additional time at a port of entry during both the departure and arrival process for health screening.

  • Volunteer with your church or local community organization.

  • America’s freedom of speech and press, freedom of association, freedom of conscience and religion, and right to free assembly have enabled civil society to participate in disseminating information about the virus and to provide medical, material, and social assistance. Draft a letter to the editor of your local newspaper raising ideas from the report.

Update.

Since this was posted several weeks ago reports now show covid cases are down 34% and falling.  Experts say that about 1/3 of people in the US have a natural immunity to the Rona bug.  (I can't find the link)  But it suggests that all though people are still dying (overwelingly those with comorbids. The fat, the otherwise sick and infirm, and the high risk people) we are probably going to see spring as the turning point.

Hopefully then the bridge troll will be discredited and out of his $415K a year job.

What is your quest?

  • I don't believe in Trump anymore, he's an illusion
It may not be working to curb Covid-19 but it sure has kicked the ass of the Flu! Just like magic no more Flu epidemics.
