NASA to fly Colorado-born Orion 'as is' on Artemis 1 mission, decides not to replace faulty component

NASA plans to go forward with a test flight of the Colorado-born Orion space capsule next year and leave in place a malfunctioning, redundant component of the spacecraft’s data systems.

The space agency decided against trying to replace the component for the Artemis 1 test flight without crew aboard, and the Orion capsule, made by Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space, will soon be ready to stack “as is” on a rocket at Kennedy Space Center, in Florida.

“NASA will proceed with spacecraft processing, and engineers are currently completing final closeout activities and will transfer the spacecraft in mid-January,” NASA said in a blog entry about the decision. “The new timeline does not impact the launch schedule, and NASA remains on track for a launch in November 2021.”
