Fauci calls COVID-19 vaccine rollout 'disappointing'

Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious diseases expert, on Thursday said the coronavirus vaccine rollout hasn't gone as he expected.

"We would have liked to have seen it run smoothly and have 20 million doses into people today by the end of the 2020, which was the projection," Fauci said during an appearance on "Today." "Obviously, it didn't happen, and that's disappointing."

The Trump administration had touted a goal of getting 20 million people a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the year. But the actual number will fall far short of that mark.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's COVID data tracker, about 2.8 million people have received their first vaccine dose as of Thursday.

Now, imagine if the FDA had acted with the same kind of urgency as the UK's MHRA!

The current rate of daily vaccinations is 200K-300K a day. Multiply that by the 9 days between the UK's approval and the FDA's approval!!! Instead of "just" 2.8 million (as of yesterday AM, https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccinations ) having been vaccinated the US might be in the 5-6 million range.

As of yesterday AM, ~2.8M people had received their first dose, while ~12.4M doses had been distributed to states. The 12.4M distributed is the Feds' side of the effort; the 2.8M is the states' side of the effort. The MSM and Prog punditocracy are blurring that distinction, Because Trump.

If in fact, they didn't meet their projected numbers, the criticism is a valid POV.

It's up to the Trump people to get equal time in front of the camera to tout the remarkable speed this vaccine made it to the public...beyond everyone betting against him.

As of January 4, 2021, 9:00 AM ET:

* 15,418,500 doses of vaccine have been distributed to states;

* 4,563,260 people have received their first vaccination dose.

As I pointed out above, the original OWS goal of 20M doses distributed by the end of 2020 might have been met but for FDA dawdling. Certainly, given an extra week or 10 days of distribution, reality would have exceeded the ~60% of goal that in fact was accomplished.

What is currently a CF, in most states, is getting the vaccine doses to people. Some states, e.g. the Dakotas and Connecticut, have injected more than half the doses they've received. Other states ... their governors should be inventing invective trying to extract explanations from their "public health" bureaucrats!

And who was the genius who said that the Moderna doses should be cut in half so the vaccine would go further?  These hotshots are truly brain dead.

It sounds like the possibility is being considered, https://www.businessinsider.com/slaoui-us-two-half-doses-moderna-covid-19-vaccine-2021-1?op=1 . I'd have to see if Moderna's Phase I test data has anything about a dosage half what is being used, but the idea may not be dumb. On the other hand, that bottleneck at present is not vaccine production or distribution form factories to states. The bottleneck at present appears to be states' and localities' distribution processes.

After the first vaccination, antibody responses were higher with higher dose (day 29 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay anti–S-2P antibody geometric mean titer [GMT], 40,227 in the 25-μg group, 109,209 in the 100-μg group, and 213,526 in the 250-μg group). After the second vaccination, the titers increased (day 57 GMT, 299,751, 782,719, and 1,192,154, respectively). After the second vaccination, serum-neutralizing activity was detected by two methods in all participants evaluated, with values generally similar to those in the upper half of the distribution of a panel of control convalescent serum specimens. ...

"Titer" is a unit referring to concentration of a substance. The full dose currently being administered is 100 μG. A half-dose was not tested, but a quarter-dose, 25 μG, was, and after two doses 25 μG was found to be as effective as the upper half of the distribution of the control convalescent serum specimens.

So while doing a half-dose for the first or for both doses would produce a measurably lower concentration of antibodies, it would not be dumb. At this point the CF in many states makes such a measure unnecessary at present.
