38 Banning residents displaced after fire destroys newly-built temporary homes

A total of 38 people are without a home after a fire tore through a Banning community Saturday afternoon. The fire erupted at about 12:48 p.m. on the 1900 block of E. Ramsey Street.

"The first engine got on scene and said there was multiple structures on fire," said Riverside County and Calfire Batt. Chief William Otterman.

The community was built in April to house several homeless people, and came to be known as Ramsey Street Village.

"There’s 20 total pods there and 19 of them were destroyed and 1 was heavily damaged," said Batt. Chief Otterman.

The cause is under investigation. My guess is that one of the Sacred Homeless did something careless or stupid. Not that I know anything beyond what is in this article.

Banning is along I-10 about 80 miles east of LA.

Fell asleep smoking or cooking? In any case from the way those things went up they would appear to be more deathtrap than shelter. I wonder how long until some shyster starts pushing a law suit.

I wonder whether the bureaucrats who arranged for these shelters used materials with the proper fire rating.

I have a chunk of land here by town... walking distance to a grocery and not far from uptpwn proper... Call it biking distance.

Though about putting up some little tiny-home style cabins on it. maybe 3/400 a month. I could get ten of those on that place - 5 with parking and 5 without... Would make a decent income off the project, would be affordable to do out of pocket, and could be repeated and scaled. and help some folks down on their luck at the same time.

Nope. If I had 3/4ths of a million bucks to put into an apartment house maybe... But then it wouldn't be 3/400 a month anymore, would it.

And by the way - I have lived significant parts of my life in line shacks and cabins only a little bigger than they are saying here. no running water, no bathroom, and wood or kerosene heat. I got by just fine - comfortable even.

The term 'homes' threw me off. How could 38 homes burn down together?
But it is really just one big wood frame apartment/condo complex. That's why they all burned.
