After Fort Hood, the U.S. Army Will Succeed or Fail on Trust

“The murder of Specialist Vanessa Guillen shocked our conscience and brought attention to deeper problems.” So began Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy’s public statement on Dec. 8 as he, Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville, and Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Grinston addressed the Report of the Fort Hood Independent Review Committee. While senior Army leaders, including McCarthy, had previously talked about how Guillen’s murder affected them personally and professionally, the report identified failings far deeper than many had foreseen.

I’m an old soldier, one who had the privilege of serving for nearly 38 years, and in some fairly senior positions. A few years ago, I had the honor of chairing the congressionally directed National Commission on the Future of the Army, and I am now the president of the Association of the United States Army, a nonprofit organization that supports soldiers, their families, Army civilians, veterans, retirees, and the businesses that support the Army.

A query addressed to the many former soldiers who post on TBR.
Given the disgraceful behavior that has occurred at Ford Hood, as well as other posts,
what has happened to the value of Honor & Integrity that Officers are sworn to uphold???

You have to have some in order for it to be manifested in one's leadership traits.

If it's not ingrained into the officers during their childhood or adolescence, it's pretty damned hard to expect it to be taught in class and expect any real measure of success.

I see fewer and fewer "leaders" with the morals and values that would make the concepts of honor and integrity "easy" to bring to the forefront.

West Point cheating "scandal" comes to mind.  If those are just the ones who were caught, imagine how many who cheated and still managed to graduate.  They lack integrity and honor, let alone accountability.
Throwing our allegiances to political parties in the long run gave away our liberty.

Sadly, you're absolutely correct about ingrained values,
a point Plato raised often as a measure of character in leaders.

Too many of today's young are too self-centered to be others centered.  They have been taught by adults and schools there is no reason to be patriotic, let alone patriotic leaders.  They have been taught to be PC, against free speech, been taught that the history of this country is the cause of all evil in the world,  Their "learning" has taught them police are bad, big government is good, better in fact, than relying on oneself to solve problems.  They wait for others to give them advice, and when some advice falls flat they turn into snow flakes.  All kids?  Of course not.  But certainly enough with a negative view of everything to make it bad for everyone they "lead."  They have seen one political party in particular, to be disrespectful of the office of the POTUS, disrespectful of the Constitution, disrespectful of the rule of law.  They have seen rioters called patriotic, and patriots who cause no harm,  rioters.  This is perfect Cloward/Piven strategy, a strategy endorsed by democrats.  Their government is in total chaos, almost all democrats and a large number of republicans, espouse Communism while demeaning the Constitutional Republic they were blessed with.  They are bombarded by a media who hates everything not liberal in nature, while the innermost feeling reject the ideas of communism, which is the democrat party in this country.  A person cannot give what do not have and too many of the young people have no love of self, respect for others, for country, for religion, for Constitution, for dignity, and TRUE HISTORY, not the rewritten history of liberalism.

From the Garden of Eden till the French Enlightenment, spanning thousands of millenia,
Man always accepted his spiritual sensibilities as his anchor, particularly during times of
great angst, dread and malaise. I am emphatically NOT referring to religion here!
Then the Enlightenment emerged, along w/Capitalism, ushering in an alternate sensibility
that material betterment was Man's higher calling.
This fateful, and perhaps fatal change, has afflicted the world over the past 300 years
and Mankind is emphatically not better off for this sea change in temperment.
Anyone disputing this, needs to look clearly at History over the past 3 centuries.
