This story is reminiscent of the recent report that various sheriff’s departments around New York State are refusing to enforce Andrew Cuomo’s Thanksgiving lockdown rules, leaving him furious. But today’s tale comes to us from the other side of the country. In Orange County, California, Sheriff Don Barnes responded to a new, limited stay-at-home order from Governor Gavin Newsom. The short version of his response boils down to the reality of limited personnel and resources, leading him to say that he has no plans to deploy deputies to enforce the order. Will Newsom wind up being “furious†as well?...Lest you think this standoff in Orange County is an isolated incident, it’s not. Fresno Sheriff Margaret Mims had an even more blunt message for Newsom. She held a press conference and declared that her deputies weren’t going to be “making criminals out of ordinary citizens.â€
The Sacramento police and sheriff departments said they won’t enforce Newsom’s new orders — even in the seat of the state capital....Orange, Riverside, and Los Angeles County Sheriffs have all announced they will not be the Thanksgiving police. ......In the Central Valley where four county sheriffs will not be playing Thanksgiving police, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said she had no desire to make “criminals out of normally law-abiding citizens.†......She’s joined by Merced, Kings, and Tulare County sheriffs.In Northern California, ABC 10 reports that 13 counties (and cities) there won’t be enforcing the Thanksgiving dinner rules or the month-long curfew, including Sacramento County, home of the state capital where all of these rules are coming from.
The City of Pasadena, home of the Rose Bowl, will not be forcing restaurants and small businesses to shut down for three weeks despite the Los Angeles County order.According to KTLA, the City of Pasadena has its own health department and therefore makes its own decisions regarding health directives. While no formal vote took place, the city council unanimously agreed to assess the situation daily.“The City of Pasadena will continue to assess its COVID numbers, work closely with Huntington Hospital and give as much advance notice as possible if the City’s Order is going to change in any respect,†city spokesperson Lisa Derderian said in a written statement to the outlet.
