It’s been one year since the U.S. Army awarded Raytheon Missiles & Defense a $384 million contract to deliver six Lower Tier Air & Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) radar under an Other Transactional Authority (OTA) agreement. Gallium nitride is a semiconductor material with microwave frequency capability and efficiency characteristics that could displace TWTs and klystrons in some power applications. It's only come into commercial and military use in the past 20 years or so, so its potential is still being explored.
