The little Ice Age was about 700 years later than the dates referenced in the article and was not caused by volcanoes, but by a shutdown of the sun exacerbated by a few volcanic eruptions. That era referenced by the article was a brief mini cold time caused by one eruption in Iceland and only lasted for a year or two, but is severely damaged the Byzantine and Sassinid Empires
