Second stimulus checks: Democratic leadership rejects bipartisan proposal with $1,200 direct payments

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Democratic leadership in the House rejected a bipartisan $1.5 trillion coronavirus aid proposal that includes a second round of $1,200 direct payments to Americans.

The plan, unveiled by a group calling itself Problem Solvers Caucus, also included $500 billion for cities and states, unemployment insurance of $600 a week, increased SNAP benefits and rental assistance.

A set of powerful Democratic committee chairs swung against the proposal saying it “leaves too many needs unmet” — a leadership effort that signals that the Problem Solvers bill is going nowhere.

No. 2 House Democrat Steny Hoyer of Maryland said the caucus had developed “useful ideas, important ideas” but said the proposal did not do enough to address the ongoing needs of helping the economy recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

Trump undercuts GOP, calls for bigger COVID-19 relief package

President Trump on Wednesday shook up the high-stakes debate over coronavirus relief, undercutting the Republicans' long-held position by urging GOP leaders to go big.

Senate Republicans had initially offered a $1.1 trillion package in emergency aid, but subsequently voted on a proposal providing just $650 billion — only $350 billion of it in new funding.

Democrats have howled at the GOP’s “emaciated” offer, arguing that it falls far short of the funding needed to address the dual crises of health and economy caused by the deadly coronavirus.

On Wednesday morning, Trump stunned Washington by joining those  Democratic critics by calling for Republicans to seek much more funding than they’ve previously proposed.

“Go for the much higher numbers, Republicans, it all comes back to the USA anyway (one way or another!),” Trump tweeted.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
Hate to say it, but I hope the Dems keep blocking it. We can't afford it.

We need to focus on the Dem governors opening up the blue states and getting their economies back to work. It's the only real solution.

You have to know.... that the Dems aren't interested in solutions and therefore, aren't going to open up the blue states before the election....

right?

No, but the Republicans should be hammering on it.

That's the heart of the problem, the elephant in the room.

You mean.... the Republicans that do possess a set of nads?   I only know of a couple or scant few of those, unfortunately.

I can't help thinking about how the founding fathers must be feeling, looking down and observing what the idiots have done to this country, despite their best efforts via the Constitution.   I'm betting it makes them mad.  It sure as hell makes me mad.

Even Trump should be hammering this, and hard, pointing out a second stimulus wouldn't need to be any bigger if the Dem govs would just open up their states.

He hasn't said alot about this so far, and he needs to.

I agree.   But I gave up hoping he'd say what needed to be said vs. what he wanted to say a while ago.   Yeah, I'll vote for him (no other choice)... but I still do question some of his decisions and statements.  I realize that he is privy to a lot more knowledge than any of us is, that could explain it....

but still.... logic compels me to wonder why....?
