Storm Tracker Forecast: Hazardous air quality continues but winds next week could improve air quality
It was another day of widespread smoke over California and most of the West Coast as numerous large fires continue to burn, and very little wind has been blowing lately to push it elsewhere. Strong wind next week should help move the smoke out but will also increase fire danger.
Unhealthy to hazardous air quality continues across our region and will likely be the same tomorrow as winds remain relatively light. Tomorrow we should reach the upper-80s to low-90s in the valley. A RED FLAG WARNING will be in place in Siskiyou & Modoc counties Sunday for strong winds and low humidity.
A system will come in off the coast and linger in the Pacific for several days (Sunday-Wednesday). It will eventually move inland Thursday-Saturday.
This system will bring cooler weather, with daily highs dropping a little each day it is near us. By Friday highs will barely be in the 80s in the valley.
It will bring more humidity into the region, which will help with ongoing fires and new fire starts. And a few showers might, I emphasize might, be possible in our northern mountain regions. The coast will likely see a few of those showers.
But conversely, the system will bring strong winds on-shore. This will help us cool down but will also increase fire danger. Strong winds from the south and west will possible leading to faster spreading of new and existing fires. They're expected to be strongest on Monday. Winds sustained 15-20 mph in the valley and 20-25 mph in the foothills and mountains with wind gusts up to 35 mph possible. A FIRE WEATHER WATCH has been issued in the Sierra-Cascades foothills and mountains for this high fire danger threat on Monday.
