BLM Leader Faces 15 Years on Felony Charges

Last month, The San Luis Obispo Police Department arrested Tianna Arata, a Black Lives Matter leader after a protest she organized turned violent.

Arata is 20 years old and based in California. The protest that she was arrested for involved 300 protesters blocking a highway. They also attacked a vehicle with a small child inside.

Arata promised police that the protest would remain peaceful

From the local newspaper, https://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/article244852657.html :

SLO protest leader Tianna Arata’s case gains national attention — and donations are pouring in

Quote
On Aug. 5, the agency asked county prosecutors to charge Arata with five felonies and three misdemeanors related to her July 21 arrest after marchers blocked traffic on Highway 101.

If convicted of all charges proposed by the Police Department, Arata could potentially face several years in San Luis Obispo County Jail, though the precise maximum sentence will not be known until the county District Attorney’s Office makes a filing decision.

Arata, 20, has not been formally charged in court, and prosecutors say they have substantial work to do reviewing the San Luis Obispo Police Department’s case against her. She and another arrested protester, Elias Bautista, are not in police custody and are scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment Sept. 3.

Item #1 in this article gives an account of what happened, https://heavy.com/news/2020/08/tianna-arata/ . The rest of it is basically pro-Arata blah-blah.

Thanks, @DB! If it isn't clear from the several articles across the several posts, US 101 is a freeway, the only freeway through the city. So it gets significant use by commuters. The choice to move the "protest" onto to the freeway around 5:15-5:30 PM was not just dangerous, it was done to  foul up the commute. BTW, Mitchell Park, in which the "protest" was supposed to be, is about a mile from where the "protesters" entered US 101.

I'm sure you already know but for others, the 101 and the 5 are the two major freeways going north/south connecting most of the west coast together. The 101 is nearer or on the coast and the 5 is inland. They parallel each other from Los Angles in California to Northern Washington State. shutting down the 101 is a big deal.
