Wow, this thing may have have quite a bit of similarity to the 1947 Texas City explosion (except it was ammonium nitrate).  I remember my grandparents telling me they heard that one 150 miles away.

I saw a video on Twitter taken by a guy walking down a street - bodies strewn about. Just awful.  You can see it somewhere on this thread:

People also speculating it wasn't just that some confiscated weapons were stored there, but that it was a factory producing missiles for Iran. Others (of course, kneejerk) blaming Israel. Perhaps we'll see.  :shrug:

White structure near the original fire seems to be a very large grain elevator.
When empty or partially empty, these can be vulnerable to huge explosions due to the highly volatile dust inside.

What's the situation in Lebanon?

Lebanon is experiencing political turmoil, with street demonstrations against the government's handling of the worst economic crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.

There has also been tension on the border with Israel, which said last week that it had thwarted an attempt by Hezbollah to infiltrate Israeli territory. But a senior Israeli official has told the BBC that "Israel has no connection" to the Beirut blast.

The blast happened close to the scene of a huge car bombing which killed ex-PM Rafik Hariri in 2005. Tuesday's blast also came days before the long-awaited verdict in the trial at a special court in the Netherlands of four men accused of orchestrating the attack.

Similar explosion in 1947 in Texas City, Texas which witnesses also claim looked like a nuclear explosion and was the largest explosion ever in the U.S. The Sodium Nitrate  explosion claim seems likely.

As for Trump's response, he's already claiming it was a bomb. Way too soon for him to be making the claim that it was an attack.
