'The views are stunning': New stretch of Bay Trail openshttps://www.sfgate.com/news/bayarea/article/New-Stretch-Of-Bay-Trail-Opens-Saturday-15418047.phpCyclists whizzed past at breakneck speed and the waters of the bay sparkled as a new stretch of the Bay Trail enabling folks to walk from Oakland to Richmond formally opened in Albany on Saturday.
The $18.9 million East Bay Regional Park District project added a new mile-long segment to the trail behind the Golden Gate Fields racetrack, closing a gap in the trail between Berkeley and Albany.
"This is a legacy of 20 years of partnerships with the community, community leaders and the park district," said Park District Board Member Elizabeth Echols during a brief opening ceremony on the trail.
I think the long-term goal is a trail (system) that encircles the bay. There are a couple of running events that use the trail from near the Victory Ship museum in Richmond south to Albany (turning around to go back to Richmond). There are a couple more events that take the bay Trail from a park in San Leandro south almost to the San Mateo Bridge (SR92) and back. There's also an event that uses a segment of the trail near Redwood City. I don't want to think about (future, I assume) segments at Hunter's Point and East Palo Alto (not the safest parts of the Bay Area).
Nutsy-boltsy musings aside, the views along the trail segments near Richmond and near San Leandro really are beautiful.
