Florida is in trouble -- Just as I had feared. There are only approximately 303 hospitals in the state of FL, with appx. 67,000 beds.  Fortunately the end of tourist season is just winding down, but come the end of September we will enter our tourist season and our population increases by about 5%.  FL has 178,594 positive cases of the coronavirus in the state. The case count includes 175,718 Florida residents and 2,876 non-Florida residents. There are 3,684 Florida resident deaths reported, 101 non-resident deaths and 15,491 hospitalizations, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Lee Health: Spike in COVID-19 cases growing fast, hospitals could be full soon

...  Lee Health officials said its hospitals could be "completely full" by the end of July if action isn't taken.

Lee Health CEO Larry Antonucci said Friday the coronavirus curve is no longer flat and that there's a spike in Southwest Florida.

Antonucci said Lee Health is at risk of "hitting critical mass," and if the community doesn't take action and if hospitalizations continue at the current rate, they will run out of room in hospitals.

About a month ago, Lee Health was treating 100 COVID-19 patients a day. Now, that number has tripled to about 300.

He said it's important to stay home, to keep washing your hands and to wear a mask when you have to go outside.

Currently, ICU beds at Lee Health facilities are at 89 percent capacity as of Friday afternoon.

Antonucci said that hospital staff has the ability to convert regular beds to ICU beds if necessary, but is still worried about what this month could bring.
