Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has admitted recent protests and mass demonstrations have led to a spike in coronavirus cases in the city.

Garcetti revealed during a press conference on Wednesday that LA County health officials believe some of the new COVID-19 cases may have come from large groups of people gathering at rallies. 

'I talked again with [Director of Public Health] Dr Barbara Ferrer about that this morning. She does think some of the spread did come from our protests,' the mayor told reporters.

It was stupid of him to deny there was any link! Attributing all of the increase to the protests would be equally unintelligent, though I've not seen any comments that were that simplistic. The word "some" is cautious and correct, I think. In my opinion (which with a Hamilton will get you a vente latte and change at Starchucks) the main sources, in approximate order of significance, are:

1. The protests;

2. Large social gatherings (e.g. house parties);

3. US citizen expats and legal aliens with green cards transported from overwhelmed hospitals in Mexico (many of these are seriously ill, and CA's death rate will probably be affected);

4. or 5. Churches;

5. or 4. Bars, and restaurants;

6. Random.

A little over a week ago, I finally had lunch out at the local diner  with a dear friend after not seeing each other since March.  We ate outside, wore our masks till the meals were delivered to our table and the tables were set the requisite 6 feet apart.  Neither my friend nor I contracted COVID. 

But now that there has been an uptick in COVID cases around these parts, the bars, restaurants and casino are getting the blame and have been shut down till Friday.  4th of July fireworks and other celebrations were canceled.   Yet, the so-called "peaceful protests" with no masks or social distancing are allowed to continue. 

This mayor may be an idiot Democrat, but at least he is finally being honest, unlike the local officials in my area.  Now what is he going to do about the protests in his city?    Or is he going to continue to consider them necessary and of "redeeming social importance" or whatever BS the Democrats are using to justify them, and allow them to continue?
