Texas restaurants and bars got some good news Saturday afternoon: they will be able to sell mixed drinks to go beginning immediately, providing a much-needed new revenue stream for the beleaguered industry.
The Texas Restaurant Association and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission announced Saturday that Gov. Greg Abbott extended the alcohol-to-go waiver to allow cocktails with take-out and food delivery orders.
The order, approved by Abbott Saturday, comes a day after the governor announced major setbacks for Texas restaurants and bars. On Friday, Abbott announced that Texas restaurants would have to return to service at 50 percent capacity beginning June 29, a reduction of the 75 percent capacity in effect since June 12. Abbott also shut down all bars in Texas effective noon on Friday in an effort to stem the surge of COVID-19 cases.
Under Abbott’s expanded waiver, restaurants (as well as bars with a mixed beverage permit) will be allowed to sell mixed drinks to go. Mixed drinks to go were previously prohibited; only cocktail kits were allowed with alcohol in the manufacturer’s original package.
