L'Oreal to remove words like 'whitening' from products

Paris (AFP) -- French cosmetics giant L'Oreal announced Saturday it was removing words like "whitening" from its products, against the backdrop of global anti-racism protests.

"The L'Oreal Group has decided to remove the words white/whitening, fair/fairness, light/lightening from all its skin evening products," the company said in a statement.

Several companies -- including L'Oreal -- have been criticised recently for skin-lightening products after the global rise of the Black Lives Matter movement following the police killing in the US of African-American George Floyd last month.

So they are changing their products to 'blackening'?

Sorry if I do not buy any of those.

Cosmetic giant L’Oreal to remove words ‘white/whitening, fair/fairness, light/lightening’
June 27, 2020 | Jon Dougherty

Cosmetic behemoth L’Oreal announced this week the company would delete the word “whitening” from its skin-lightening products in light of ongoing protests over racial equality.

The French cosmetic leader also said it will be dropping the term “lightening” as well from similar products, Fox News reported.

“The L’Oreal Group has decided to remove the words white/whitening, fair/fairness, light/lightening from all its skin evening products,” said the company in a statement.

While the move is the latest among large corporations to signal their willingness to become more racially inclusive — which implies that they weren’t willing to do so before recent protests following the death of George Floyd in May — it also belies the fact that the products were in demand.

Fox News adds:

L’Oreal’s skin brightening creams are amongst the most popular on the market and are targeted towards Asian, African and Caribbean buyers who face a cultural stigma where lighter skin is perceived as more desirable.

Besides changing their advertisements in a Virtue Signalling way, will they stop making those lily white products?

Yep. Remove the words, but will they continue to make those dollars? I could make a guess here, but perhaps others have a more accurate forecast.

Capitalist companies abound when it comes to the new product. Virtue Signalling.

I suppose some here should adjust their investment portfolios.

My daughter who lives in Xining, China (when she isn't stuck here courtesy of the coronavirus) cannot use locally available cosmetics because they make her look even more pale than she already is. She's had friends mention that they don't like being in pictures with her because she makes their skin look so dark (they aren't saying it unkindly). I've noticed at least one lady at work who is from Taiwan or the mainland who wears make-up that very obviously includes a whitener. It's a cultural fashion thingy (IOW, L’Oreal, et al are supplying, not creating, demand), though I've heard that some domestic mfrs in China use lightening ingredients that are less safe than mfrs such as L’Oreal use. So international mfrs such as L’Oreal dropping out of that market niche might result in a higher % of less safe products being used.

If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

Just wondering if this will carry over to the manufacturers of toothpaste.
