Chris Wallace desperate to stick to low rally turnout narrative in tense segment with Mercedes Schlapp
June 21, 2020 | Jon Dougherty
Fox News host Chris Wallace appeared to suggest during his program on Sunday that empty seats at President Donald Trump’s Tulsa rally Saturday evening were the result of a lack of support, not due to well-publicized efforts by Left-wing activists to sabotage the event.
In an interview with Mercedes Schlapp, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, Wallace noted that previously, the campaign announced that although more than 1 million people had requested tickets for the venue, “we all saw the pictures last night, that the arena was no more than two-thirds full, and the outdoor rally that had been planned for the overflow crowd was canceled because there was no overflow crowd.â€
He prodded: “What happened?â€
“Let me explain when it comes to understanding how the rallies work, it’s a first-come, first-served basis,†Schlapp began. “Basically, what the one million RSVPs include, it’s an opportunity for us to gather data, to get information, obviously.
“So, the key here that is important is to understand…[supporters] were concerned about the protesters who were coming in,†Schlapp continued, noting that she has family who lives near Tulsa who confirmed that.
She also noted that protesters were involved in blocking the entrances to the venue, and were also engaged in other acts of violence.
“We saw that had an impact in terms of people coming to the rally,†she continued. “But what was amazing, Chris, is the fact that over 5.3 million people watched it on all of our digital media channels, and so the reach was far and wide.â€
Schlapp noted further that figure did not include the number of television viewers.
“We also did a pre-rally show, and that was over two million views,†she said.
