Here are the Confederate statues in the Capitol

Congressional Democrats launched a new push this week to remove Confederate statues from the Capitol grounds.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called for their removal Wednesday by saying the statues, donated by states, pay “homage to hate, not heritage.”

Reps. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) introduced a bill Thursday to send the statues back to states or the Smithsonian within 120 days, and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) introduced a companion bill in the Senate.


The killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in Minneapolis police custody, has spurred protests around the country and galvanized efforts to take down Confederate monuments nationwide.

Eleven statues in the National Statuary Hall Collection commemorate Confederate soldiers and officials, including several in their Confederate uniforms. Democrats first pushed for their removal in 2017.

James Zachariah George, former U.S. senator from Mississippi and member of the Confederacy as well as the Mississippi Secession Convention

Wade Hampton, lieutenant general for the Confederacy and former Democratic governor of South Carolina

John E. Kenna, member of the Confederate States Army, former Democratic congressman and U.S. senator from West Virginia

Uriah Milton Rose, chairman of the Resolutions Committee of the Arkansas Democratic Party

Edmund Kirby Smith, general for the Confederate States Army with no recorded political party affiliation

Alexander Hamilton Stephens, vice president of the Confederate States who served as a Democratic congressman from Georgia and governor of Georgia

Zebulon Baird Vance, member of the Confederate Army and former Democratic governor of North Carolina

Joseph Wheeler, commander in the Confederate Army and former Democratic congressman from Alabama

Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate States Army

Edward Douglass White, member of Confederate Army, former Louisiana Democratic senator and associate justice of the Supreme Court

Yeah, you're shocked at how many were Dems, . Edward Douglass White is interesting. He was appointed to the USSC by Grover Cleveland, a Dem. White voted for the Plessy vs. Ferguson decision; OTOH he voted to strike down a law some southern states used to deny blacks the right to vote. He was later appointed Chief Justice by Taft, a R, and was succeeded as Chief Justice by Taft.
