McConnell taps Tim Scott to assemble GOP police reform legislation

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Tuesday that he has tapped Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.), the only African American Republican in the upper chamber, to put together police reform legislation.

McConnell said his party needs to respond to civil unrest that has swept the country since the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died after a police officer pinned him to the ground for nine minutes during an arrest.

“I’ve asked Sen. Tim Scott to lead a group that is working on a proposal to allow us to respond to the obvious racial discrimination that we’ve seen on full display on our television screens over the last two weeks,” McConnell said after Scott briefed his GOP colleagues on the emerging legislation during a lunch meeting.


“Tim spent most of our lunch explaining his proposal that’s in the works,” he added.

All the promises made since at least 2010 -- eradication of Obamacare, real tax reform, fixing our immigration mess -- which Republicans were too stupid or lazy to bother fulfilling, especially when they controlled both houses of congress and the presidency -- and this is what McConnell wants to work on?    Just what "reforms" does he think our police need? 

They don't call Republicans the stupid party for nothing. 

If Republicans lose the senate, they have only themselves to blame.  Hanging onto Trump's coattails is not going to help them.

White House looks to unveil its police reform proposals soon

President Donald Trump could unveil a set of proposals for policing reform as early as Thursday, according to two senior administration officials.

The package is expected to include both legislative and executive measures. Among the proposals under discussion are databases that track police officers with multiple instances of misconduct, and changes to policing tactics, though one senior administration official said there's no consensus on proposing a ban on chokeholds.
