BEN LOMOND (CBS SF) — Steven Carrillo, the alleged gunman who ambushed and killed a Santa Cruz sheriff deputy and wounded two other law enforcement officers, was a staff sergeant assigned to Travis Air Force base and may have a connection to the slaying of a Federal Security officer killed in Oakland during a night of violence related to the death of George Floyd.

In a statement Sunday, the FBI said it was investigating a connection between Carrillo’s white van and a similar vehicle that may have been used in the fatal shooting of federal protective services officer David Underwood and the wounding of a second officer on May 29 during a night of unrest last week when an Oakland protest over the death of George Floyd turned violent.

The Ben Lomond ambush shooting that killed a Santa Cruz County sheriff deputy is a tragedy, but that the suspect might also be the killer of the Federal officer last week makes this a pretty big capture.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — The FBI and local investigators are trying to determine a possible link between the ambush-style killing of a Northern California sheriff’s deputy Saturday night and that of a federal officer who was fatally shot outside the U.S. courthouse in Oakland more than a week ago.

The FBI office in San Francisco confirmed Sunday its investigators were working with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department to determine a possible motive and links to other crimes committed in the San Francisco Bay Area, including the attack that killed a Federal Protective Service officer and critically wounded another officer on May 29. Both involved shooters in a van.

Accused Santa Cruz killer Steven Carrillo was an Air Force sergeant who complained about about the police's use of force on Facebook before he allegedly killed Sheriff's Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller.

According to ABC7's Dan Noyes, the alleged shooter said "Who needs antifa to start riots when you have the police to do it for you."

Carrillo also wrote posts about the early warning signs of fascism which was on display at the US Holocaust Museum.

Some careless reports have stated that the shooting happened in Santa Cruz. Ben Lomond is about 12 miles and a third of a galaxy away from Santa Cruz. It's also about 3 hours' drive from Travis AFB, so I wonder if Carrillo was no longer stationed there (out of the USAF?) or might have been AWOL. While he was inspired by the riots, I doubt he is a "white supremacist".

U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Steven Carrillo, who allegedly killed a Santa Cruz deputy and wounded two others with gunfire and improvised explosives in a weekend ambush in the Santa Cruz Mountains, was captured by a local resident who wrestled him to the ground and disarmed him of an AR-15, pipe bomb and pistol in a life-or-death confrontation, CBS San Francisco Bay Area reports.

But Hart said it was the actions of a local resident who stopped Carrillo from claiming more victims Saturday night.

"This guy (Carrillo) went into the backyard of a local resident and the local resident confronted him and wanted to know what he was doing on his property," Hart said. "The suspect told him that — actually he had an AR-15 slung, he was carrying an AR. He told the resident he wanted his car keys. The resident very calmly went into his house, obtained a key and came back out and handed it to him."

"As the suspect turned around, the resident tackled him and the AR-15 fell away and the resident took this guy to the ground. At that time the suspect reached into his pocket and pulled out a pipe bomb and tried to ignite a pipe bomb while being held down."

"This resident was able to knock the pipe bomb out of his hand and then the suspect reached into his waistband and pulled out a pistol. ... The resident was able to knock the pistol out of his hand, detain this guy. Multiple other community members from Ben Lomond jumped on this guy and held him until our deputies sheriffs were able to get there and take him into custody."

It blew my mind the first time a buddy and I from Palo Alto took me up there. It’s like being transported to to the deepest parts of the mountains and hollows of the Smoky Mountains, yet accessible from the South Bay. Weird.

The militant group is known for the distinctive Hawaiian shirts its members wear at protests, often while brandishing AR-15s and agitating for the “Boog” — the group’s shorthand for civil war. ...

Has anyone ever seen such a militia? Do they advertise? Mr. M and I belong to a rod and gun club, which probably qualifies as "heavily armed."

Gee, I hope this "evolution" doesn't mean we Constitution-supporting fiscal conservatives are on an inevitable slide toward Boogalooism. I don't have a Hawaiian shirt.

I realize that the deluded aren't rational, but how in the world did Carillo think that killing a sheriff's deputy in a tiny semi-remote mountain town think he could thereby start a civil war? The PBS--Berkeley Journalism narrative looks like an effort to clothe events in a political fantasy-smear that does not fit.
