LIVE UPDATES: March, rally turns destructive as protesters vandalize parts of downtown, set police car on fire

Matt Johnson   |   Updated: May 29, 2020 - 9:33 PM

ATLANTA — Protests over the death of George Floyd have taken a destructive turn in downtown Atlanta.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., some type of scuffle happened between a protester and an Atlanta police officer right outside the CNN Center along Centennial Olympic Drive.

[WATCH: LIVE Stream]

Police formed a barricade and kept protesters at bay right for quite a while and then the protesters took a destructive turn. Shortly after 8 p.m., protesters started smashing the doors of the CNN. Then they moved to parked police cruisers and began jumping on the cars, smashing the windows and eventually set a police cruiser on fire.

I don't see CNN giving this much coverage.  These were aggrieved protesters when they were burning down Minneapolis.  But now that they are on CNN's doorstep .  .  .

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

No arrest totals yet after night of violent protests in Atlanta

Shaddi Abusaid, The AJC    |    2 hrs ago

Atlanta police are still tallying the number people arrested or injured overnight after a protest downtown turned violent, leading to fires and looting across the city.

At least one demonstrator was shot, authorities said, though he is expected to survive.

Widespread looting was reported at shops and restaurants downtown and in Buckhead shortly after Georgia State Patrol troopers dispersed protesters gathered outside Centennial Olympic Park with what appeared to be tear gas.  .  .  .

At least Waffle House was saved.

Atlanta rioters spare beloved Waffle House during George Floyd protest

Rioters in Atlanta decided to spare a local Waffle House, amid an otherwise uninterrupted rampage through the city Friday evening.

Video

uploaded to Twitter shows the rabble-rousers descending on the iconic breakfast chain before an ad hoc group decision was made to leave it alone.

“Not the Waffle House,” several protesters cried, with others shouting, “No, no.”

Another man said, “Protesters decide to leave Waffle House alone. Atlanta is amazing.”

However, they trashed and looted the gift shop at the College Football Hall of Fame.
