McCarthy shreds Pelosi’s voting by proxy power grab: One Dem just voted 7 times, NOT what Founders had in mind
May 28, 2020 | Samantha Chang

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) torched Democrats for shirking their responsibility to represent the people of their districts by sidestepping their No. 1 job via mass proxy-voting.

The primary job of congressmen and women is to vote on laws in Congress. That’s how they represent the interests and the voices of their constituents from their hometown districts. This requires them to be in Washington, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.

Instead, the Democrats recently adopted a new “proxy voting rule” to enable them to stay home and allow other representatives to vote for them.

Republicans, led by Kevin McCarthy, are suing Speaker Nancy Pelosi to block this, calling the stunt unconstitutional and a gross dereliction of duty.

A Democrat from Maryland just voted seven times on legislation in Congress. This is NOT what the Founders had in mind when they created representative democracy.

One representative should equal one vote.

It is unconstitutional.

It is unconstitutional.

It remains to be seen if the SCOTUS agrees with that.  In the past, they've shown disinterest in the rules set by the Legislature to govern itself.  They could very well demure at the Republicans' attempt to stop the Proxy voting.

Remember, SCOTUS punts whenever it can.

I agree, one could make the same argument against the filibuster.
