On first day of virtual Congress, 75 Democrats stayed home

The House met for the first time Wednesday under new rules permitting proxy voting. Nearly one-third of the Democratic caucus stayed home.

According to the House clerk, 75 Democrats assigned another 40 lawmakers to vote for them by proxy, which is now permitted under a rule change passed by the Democratic majority earlier this month in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

The first vote by proxy took place hours after House Republicans condemned the new rule in a press conference and a day after they filed a lawsuit in federal court to block it.

It was a vote to clear a Senate bill sanctioning Chinese officials over the treatment of ethnic minorities in China. Democrats stood in the well of the chamber and announced their votes for absent members, all of whom cited the pandemic for their absences.

Without a quorum, the House cannot conduct business.  And they can't have a quorum with only two-thirds of Democrats showing up.  All Republicans have to do is refuse a quorum call.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

Well, let's see if the Pubbies have what it takes. :pop41:

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I think you already know the answer to that.

Sounds like you are asking for the Republicans to show they have a PAIR? Not going to happen? 8888crybaby

You know what's sad about that? Aside from them just sorta ignoring the Constitution?

Here is a real opportunity for the GOP to call out people making six figures a year (+++) to go to work and do their job instead of loaf around their living rooms or hang out by the ice cream freezer.

In the mean time a lot of AMERICA that can't go do their job on a computer (the 'you gotta be there to do it' jobs) is watching what will be percieved as lazy bastards who want to run a country by remote control.

The Pubbies could give the Dems a swift kick in the ass by demanding (with Constitutional correctness) that they get their butts in to do their job or they don't have a quorum.

Push a Constitutional challenge, now.

Otherwise, if voting by mail (e-mail or otherwise) is good enough for Congress....

We're going to have a lot of fraud in November. There will be no way for the Congress that did not insist its members show up to vote to insist that the rest of America do so.
