Win10 Network discovery
« on: April 03, 2020, 08:50:44 pm »
When my PC wakes up it doesn't turn ND back on - no network devices are visible in File Explorer - I have to reboot to get them back. All my searches just tell me how to enable ND, not how to turn it back on. In a non-toy OS that would be automatic, or at worst a right click option on the network node but since it's Windows nothing is that logical. Any suggestions?

You could try going to:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings

And change:

Put the Computer to sleep:

to: Never

@Snarknado

A few questions:
Is this a new condition?
Have there been any hardware changes, system reload, etc?
Is there a share onboard the affected machine?
Is it a hybrid network, set up to see *nix / mac ?
Any weirdo networking services?

First action:
Identify the network card, and manually obtain and install its newest drivers (from the nic manufacturer)
Make sure Win is on it's newest updates.

@Snarknado

You seem to have some bones, so I will be concise - If I am talking over your head, let me know, and I will make things more understandable (I am assuming you speak geek)

If a generic Win network, with no goofy bullcrap,
If on newest drivers/updates and no joy,
If ND is ON, and network IS Private,
If one extant share on this box in this network config:

Services. (Win+R =>services.msc)

All below must be set to 'Automatic(delayed start)'

Computer Browser (Browser) **IF PRESENT**
Function Discovery Provider Host (FDPHost)
Function Discovery Resource Publication (FDResPub)
Network Connections (NetMan)
Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRPSvc)
Peer Networking Grouping (P2PSvc)
Peer Networking Identity Manager (P2PIMSvc)
UPnP Device Host (UPnPHost)

Requires restart if you had to change anything.

**NOTE Network is 'delayed start', so are you giving it enough time to wake up?

Try accessing a network share manually, either in the file manager address bar or from a cmdbox... Even though you can't 'see' it, is it accessible?

That should not be overlooked. Sleep/wake is still a serious problem on many hardware configurations. Any machine in my network that qualifies for fixed IP is also 'always on'.

Thanks for all the feedback. I should have mentioned that I only use sharing once or twice a week so it's not worth spending much time on, or disabling sleep. I now think it might just be a file explorer issue, not ND itself - I'll do a little experimenting tomorrow...

Edit 18Apr> So this definitely appears to be some kind of File Explorer idiosyncrasy rather than a network discovery issue. I pinned my laptop share in Quick Access, then when it disappears from the Network node the QA link still opens it. Puzzling, but with the easy workaround not worth spending any more time on...
