Trump open to asking public to wear protective masks, reversing prior guidance
by Cassidy Morrison
 | March 30, 2020 07:17 PM

President Trump said Monday that he would consider recommending people wear protective masks while out in public to reduce the risk of catching or spreading the coronavirus.

"We haven't discussed it to that extent, but it's certainly something we could discuss," Trump said during Monday's coronavirus press briefing in the Rose Garden.

"I could see something like that happening for a period of time," he said.

Federal health officials initially discouraged people from buying surgical masks for themselves if they were not working in medical settings where they would be exposed to the virus, claiming that they would not help people protect themselves in everyday life.

Seems that once health care demands are met, this is another tool to minimize the spread.  I think his orignial premise was that ordinary people using them was preventing a health care professional availability.  His thinking here seems to make sense ot me.

People are making masks now. Using a mask like that would not be like an N95 mask but more of a facial cover to prevent projecting the virus in the air.

Exactly.  He wants to ensure that those working on the front lines are protected, first and foremost.  They have to be able to protect themselves in order to help others.

Very true.  Hopefully our medical professionals will have the supply and stockpiles that they need and then the public sector will soon be able to purchase them.

@mystery-ak

One has to know the "rules" to wear them so they will be effective.  The ones to have are the N95s and if one can find "Face Shields", those, too.  When you are ready to leave your house, using your clean hands, place the N95 on your face and clamp down the nose piece until it is tight around your nose.  Don't have any space open between the mask and your face.  Once leaving the house, DO NOT TOUCH THE MASK AGAIN until you are home again.  Do not reach up to adjust it after you leave your house.  If wearing glasses, that is some cover over your eyes.  If you have a Face Shield, put that on with the mask and nothing is getting in your mouth/nose or eyes.

If you stay 6 ft. away from everyone, you can wear the mask/face shield again.  If you are among people, closer than 6 ft., like when you are in a store and checking out with the clerk, that is closer than 6 ft., so when you get home, take the mask strings off your ears and untie strings on the face shield if you have that, and drop the mask and face shield if you have one on, into a plastic bag with straps on it so you can draw up the bag and tie the straps.  That goes in the trash right then.  Then, do the proper washing of your hands.   If you are wearing medical gloves, get rid of them when you get rid of the mask/face shield.

Due to being an EMT, I have a box of N95s, a box of face shields and a box of surgical masks with plastic eye shield attached to the top of the masks.  I have given some away to older friends and some to our dog groomer along with giving her some long term food and a big pack of toilet paper.  She doesn't have much money and she is a dear friend and my little dog and she love each other.

Right.

To keep you from infecting others.......not protecting yourself.
Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

Some confusion might be that the ever trusty WHO stated that masks do not work.

Other today are studying what So. Korea did, to have very good results keeping people more safe and alive. It might be learned they wore masks more widely, perhaps sooner in the outbreak.

In any event the WHO was wrong.

I thought China was the maker of most of the masks in the US.... and..... I thought China stopped providing the US with masks and is hoarding them all.   So finding masks to wear will be just as ""challenging"" as finding toilet paper.   Yet we're supposed to wear them NOW?
