Even the cars were social distancing.

They parked 20 feet apart on a grassy plot in Katy, with parents and children perched on their trunks or strewn on blankets nearby. The space between them served as a reminder of a global pandemic, but for two hours, the attendees were just thankful to be out of their homes.

“It’s been hard to be locked up at home,” said Tabitha Garcia, who went to the drive-in movie theater on Friday and Saturday with her husband and two sons.. “It was neat to sit as a family in the back of the truck.”

Hundreds of people this weekend came to the pop-up theater at Cane Island, a master-planned community in Katy. Rise Communities, the company that developed the neighborhood, opened the lot for free to viewers as a way to provide safe entertainment amid COVID-19.
