Trump orders US troops back to active duty for coronavirus response

President Trump signed an executive order on Friday that allows the Pentagon to mobilize former U.S. troops and members of the National Guard to help supplement troops already being used to combat the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Trump's order allows the heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Homeland Security to recall up to 1 million reserve members to active duty for up to 24 months.

"The Secretary of Defense or the Secretary of Homeland Security, as applicable, will ensure appropriate consultation is undertaken with relevant state officials with respect to the utilization of National Guard Reserve Component units activated under this authority," Trump's order states.


“Generally, these members will be persons in Headquarters units and persons with high demand medical capabilities whose call-up would not adversely affect their civilian communities,” Chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement, according to The Washington Post.

The language of the executive order states the secretaries may call up members of the military Ready Reserve for up to 24 months, in numbers not to exceed 1 million people at any one time. The order could pull from experienced veterans, including retirees.

The Secretary of Defense may instruct the individual secretaries of the Army, Air Force and Navy to call on their reserve forces. The Secretary of Homeland Security may call upon members of the Coast Guard reserve not operating under the direction of the U.S. Navy.

“I also signed an executive order giving the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security the authority to activate the Ready Reserve components of the armed forces,” Trump said Friday, during a coronavirus press briefing. “This will allow us to mobilize medical disaster and emergency response personnel to help wage our battle against the virus by activating thousands of experienced service members, including retirees.”

Trump continued, “We have a lot of people — retirees; great, great military people — they’re coming back in — who have offered to support the nation in this extraordinary time of need. And they come back in. They don’t say, ‘How much?’ They don’t say, ‘What are we getting paid?’  They just want to come back in. It’s really an incredible thing to see. It’s beautiful.”

The Pentagon is reviewing how many National Guard, Reserve and Individual Ready Reserve troops to call up in the fight against coronavirus in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order Friday.

Trump ordered Defense Secretary Mark Esper to call up a yet-to-be-determined number of ready reserve components to help in the country’s response to the fast-spreading pandemic.

 The troops will mostly consist of units and personnel with high demand medical capabilities whose call-up would not adversely affect their civilian communities, Hoffman said.

Before calling up National Guard Reserve Component units under this executive order, Esper and the Department of Health and Human Services will first consult with state officials.

Trump’s executive order allows for the call-up of up to a million troops for no longer than 24 consecutive months, but Pentagon officials don’t have a projected number of expected activations, Hoffman said, adding that the Defense Department “is now fully authorized to make activations as needed” and “will provide updates as they become available.”

No they are looking for officers and enlisted personnel in the medical fields.  They sent out 800K emails asking people to return and so far 9K have answered the call.
