Yes.  Ft. Lauderdale is in Broward county where a lot of spring breakers hang out -- but those beaches were shut down -- most beaches in FL are closed.  There is a number given for total cases for all of FL and then cases in FL that do no include non FL residents. 

Miami-Dade has a heavy illegal and Hispanic population. 

They account for 1/2 of the FL cases (so far)

Right now, it appears that 15% of those infected are being hospitalized.  Not good.  Death rate in my county is 5%. .

Fears are growing that Florida could be another coronavirus hotspot after a sharp increase in infections in the last 24 hours and nearly two dozen more deaths.

Health officials said Saturday morning they have seen 863 additional positive COVID-19 cases, which brought the total tally of cases to 3,763.

Florida is now the fourth most-hit state in the United States, after New York, New Jersey, and California, according to data by health officials and Johns Hopkins University.

Miami-Dade and Broward counties – the two most populous in the state – have recorded the highest number of infections, with more than 400 new cases between the two over the last 24 hours. Miami's Mayor Francis Javier Suarez tested positive for the virus and told Fox News he is recovering well.

At least 54 people have died of coronavirus in Florida, including at least 3 in Miami-Dade and 11 in Broward counties.

The virus has been particularly fatal for those over the age of 65, with that group making up 89% of statewide deaths. Another 35% were between the ages of 55 and 74, while people younger made up 4% of the fatalities and those over 85 were 19% of deaths.

On Friday, he issued an executive order expanding a previous directive that airline travelers from the New York City area self-quarantine for 14 days to include people from Louisiana who enter the state on Interstate 10.

The order would not apply to commercial transportation.

New Orleans is experiencing a coronavirus surge of more than 1,000 infections linked to the Mardi Gras celebration in February, sending Louisiana's total number of cases past 3,300 as of Saturday. DeSantis wants to intercept any Louisiana travelers from “seeding” the virus in Florida.

It's about a three-hour drive from New Orleans to Pensacola, Florida, and panhandle officials had expressed concerns to him about travelers fleeing the Bayou State and carrying the virus into Florida.

And the spring-breakers have now returned to their own states where my guess is that they aren't smart, or considerate enough to be self-quarantined.

Those snot nosed kids are going to spread it up north because of their reckless behavior.

This is alarming -- I am hoping that are numbers have risen so quickly because we have testing sites now throughout the state. However, I saw an interview of a woman who was tested is still waiting on results after 2 weeks.  So ... I wonder what the figures are going to look like once the results are known.  At these rates we could easily replace NY as the epicenter.

Hillsborough Among Areas Receiving Hydroxychloroquine For Coronavirus Fight, DeSantis Says

Hillsborough County is among the areas in Florida being hardest hit with coronavirus that will receive a shipment of hydroxychloroquine, a drug that is being touted by some as a possible treatment for the symptoms of coronavirus.

During a news conference on Saturday, Gov. Ron DeSantis said he worked with David Friedman, the U.S. ambassador to Israel – who he said he considers a friend -- to arrange the shipment from Israeli company Teva Pharmaceuticals.

“We’ve now arranged shipments of the hydroxychloroquine to be sent to hospital systems in Dade County, Broward and Hillsborough,” DeSantis said. “Once they have it, if other hospitals need it, we want to be able to help everybody throughout the state.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Expands Quarantine to Louisiana Travelers, Installing Checkpoints on Roads

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is requiring travelers from Louisiana to self-isolate for 14 days and said the Florida Highway Patrol will install checkpoints on major roads to screen travelers from that area, he announced on Friday.

DeSantis is imposing restrictions on travelers fleeing to Florida from Louisiana — particularly New Orleans, which is emerging as one of the hotspots of the coronavirus outbreak.
 
“New Orleans is having a lot of problems — they may not be quite as widespread as New York City. There was a concern from the Panhandle that this could impact them,” DeSantis said during a press conference on Friday.

“They are working hard to keep their rates low and we don’t want to add any problems to them,” he added.

The Florida Highway Patrol will install checkpoints on the major roads along the Alabama-Florida state line and screen drivers from Louisiana, with the exception of those driving commercial vehicles.
 
“There’ll probably be a diversion for folks with certain license plates,” DeSantis said.

Others will be required to tell authorities where they are staying in Florida and told to self-isolate for 14 days. A violation of that order could result in criminal penalties.

Hopefully he already has plans in place to expand hospital bed capacity and has ordered ventilators.  Hopefully some more medical personnel from somewhere -- we already have a shortage.

We've been staying at home for the most part for the past 2 weeks....sigh...tired of being stuck at home, but sure beats the alternative.

Florida coronavirus update for Monday: 63 deaths, nearly 5,500 cases; South Florida stay-at-home order coming; infected cruise ship on its way



....Citing that 60% of the state’s cases were in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, DeSantis said he is ordering a unified “safer at home” policy for South Florida at an announcement Monday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Although he didn’t specify what the order will contain, the announcement was made with the county mayors of all three South Florida counties plus Monroe County.

Florida’s latest numbers posted Monday morning show 63 deaths and nearly 5,500 cases, up from 60 deaths and near 5,000 cases Sunday night. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties account for 3,207 of the state’s 5,473 cases. To date, Florida has performed more than 54,000 tests. More than 48,000 of those tests proved negative, and results of nearly 1,100 are pending.

......Meanwhile, an infected cruise ship that seeks to dock in Florida has made its way across the Panama Canal, but Gov. DeSantis has said he doesn’t want to let it in.

The Holland America ship carrying four dead people and at least 138 coronavirus patients exited the Panama Canal on Monday morning............

As of Monday evening, 5,704 in the state had tested positive for COVID-19, according to the latest advisory from the state Department of Health. Collectively, the state reported 754 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Monday.

Of the state's positive cases, 715, or 12.5%, have been hospitalized.

Florida has seen 71 fatalities tied to coronavirus complications. Ages of the deceased range from 39 to 96. Conrad Buchannan, a popular DJ in Lee County, died last week at 39, marking the state's youngest fatality linked to the virus.

Florida reports 8 coronavirus deaths since this morning as cases surpass 6,700

The Florida Department of Health reported eight more deaths and 403 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 since Tuesday morning.

Officials said there are now a total of 6,741 cases and 85 deaths in the state, that is compared to 6,338 cases and 77 deaths this morning.

Of the cases, 6,490 involved Florida residents and 251 involve nonresidents.

Press conference today:

DeSantis caved -- all of FL is now on lockdown as of midnight tomorrow night except for essential services. Floridians can engage in essential services; getting groceries, medicine and doctors appointment. This order is based on the President asking for 30 days distancing and the demeanor of the President lately.

Supplies such as masks have been promised and are not arriving.

Florida is still getting international travel!

He is using billions to accelerate infrastructure projects with the DOT while traffic is shutdown.

Field hospitals are already setup in Miami-Dade and Broward county.  Hotels have offered to house medical personnel so that they don't infect their families -- also thinking of setting up hospitals within.

Coronavirus in Florida: 8,000+ cases and 1,000+ hospitalized in latest numbers

More than 8,000 people in Florida have tested positive for the new coronavirus, and hospitalizations in the state have surpassed 1,000 in updated numbers posted by the Florida Department of Health.

The latest numbers released Thursday morning show 8,010 cases of COVID-19, 1,058 people hospitalized and 128 deaths in Florida. The state has confirmed 27 deaths since Wednesday night’s release of numbers.

Miami-Dade County is still listed with 2,202 cases on the state’s dashboard, the same number as Wednesday. Seven deaths as a result of the virus have been confirmed in Miami-Dade.

Broward has 1,346 confirmed cases and 17 deaths. Palm Beach has 630 cases and 22 deaths. Monroe has 33 cases and no deaths.

Coronavirus in Florida: 9,500+ cases, with over 3,000 in Miami-Dade

More than 9,500 people in Florida have tested positive for the new coronavirus and 163 have died, according to updated numbers posted by the state’s department of health.

The latest numbers as of Friday morning show 9,585 cases of COVID-19 and 1,215 people hospitalized in the state. The 163 deaths are 19 more than Thursday evening’s total.

Miami-Dade County is now listed with 3,029 cases, most in the state, and 25 deaths as a result of the virus. There have been five more deaths confirmed since Thursday’s 5 p.m. release.

Broward has 1,565 confirmed cases and 22 deaths, with five deaths reported since Thursday evening.

Palm Beach has 781 cases and 29 deaths, with two reported since the last release.

Monroe has 38 cases and its first death, which was reported Thursday night.

The total of 5,413 cases across South Florida’s four counties represents more than half the statewide total.
