Rhode Island state police enforcing quarantine for people coming from New YorkWashington Examiner, Mar 27, 2020
State police and the National Guard in Rhode Island will make sure people coming from New York are self-quarantining for 14 days.
Gov. Gina Raimondo signed an executive order on Thursday that mandates anyone entering the state from New York via passenger vehicle, bus, or train must provide their personal information to law enforcement and self-quarantine. The order also includes anyone who has been to New York in the last two weeks.
Police and the National Guard will collect the addresses, phone numbers, and names of their family members. Raimondo said the information collected would not be used for any other purpose than to monitor people who are supposed to be in quarantine and contact tracing.
“I understand this is an extreme measure,†the governor said Thursday during a news conference.
Raimondo said the move was necessary because New York City and the surrounding areas are a “hot zone and the infection rate is skyrocketing.â€
