US does not have close to the most coronavirus cases when adjusted for population

When the United States on Thursday overtook the rest of the world in reported cases of the coronavirus, it immediately drew international headlines. While technically true, this is a misleading metric because when those numbers are adjusted for population, the U.S. does not actually have close to the most cases.

Before going further, it's worth offering a few caveats. Comparing international data at this point is tricky. Since the virus hit different countries at different times, not all countries are on the same point in the curve, meaning some countries that are trailing now can more than catch up in the weeks and months ahead. Furthermore, not all countries have the same metrics for reporting cases, nor do they all test at the same rate or administer tests with the same reliability.

In other cases, particularly the authoritarian regimes of Iran and China, there is serious reason to doubt whether they are truthfully reporting cases. In a five-week period from Jan. 23 to Feb. 29, China reported that the number of cases rose from 920 to nearly 80,000. It now expects the world to believe that its growth in new cases has essentially flat-lined and is now at just 81,782. This is in no way plausible or consistent with other more credible countries, such as South Korea, that have seen their curves flatten in a much more gradual way.

But, for the sake of this exercise, I took the raw case counts from the Johns Hopkins University database for the top 10 countries, and then I adjusted those same countries for the U.S. population.

Actually, the worst places in terms of per capita infection rate are the little postage-stamp sized countries in Europe:  Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, Andorra and Monaco all have higher per capita infection rates than Switzerland (which tops the list for "big" countries on that count).

Maybe first in officially reported cases, but nowhere near first in deaths. Our death rate is at about 1%, near the bottom among countries hard-hit by this.

With New York health officials encouraging people to get out and have a good time and "defy" the Coronavirus (in spite of CDC and Federal warnings), it is almost as if they wanted more 'victims' so they could elevate themselves to the pinnacle of victimhood in this, either as a political ploy, to get lopsided funding (compared to what they would have needed had they backed the POTUS' plan), or both.
That the competition would be coming from another Democrat-run, 'victimhood' oriented jurisdiction is no real surprise.

Quite frankly I doubt we have the most cases in absolute numbers either.  I think China is lying about their case numbers and death toll -- they haven't moved in over a week, despite reports of imported cases in provinces mostly unaffected by the spread within China provoking xenophobia, which proves the static case number to be a lie, and reports of numbers of funeral urns arriving in Wuhan far in excess of the number needed for their official death toll strongly suggests that number is also a lie.

The acid test will come in less than a month from now.
By then the virus will probably have spread to and infected most of the people it will afflict.
If the mortality rate proves to be under one percent (hopefully no more than one tenth of one percent the average flu mortality rate), then there will be no reason not to go back to normal activity for most of the country.
The oldies and the infirm can still stay quarantined for a while longer...... everybody else back to work.

What's most frightening is that this is actually plausible.

Well, I suppose more stupid than half a bucket of worm crap level stupidity might be responsible, but these are allegedly public health professionals whom one would think would tend to err on the side of caution.

That suggests a deeper motivation than mere professionalism and the appearance of competence, and with Democrats, Partisan Politics sure seem to reach that level often.
