Stanford prof: Coronavirus may be less deadly than we think — and too mild to justify these aggressive countermeasures

Allahpundit Posted at 4:01 pm on March 17, 2020

I offer this not to encourage complacency, of which there’s already been far too much, but as a purgative after feeding you a horse-sized dose of hopelessness this morning.

John Ioannidis is a respected epidemiologist at Stanford. His specialty is “metascience,” i.e. calling BS on shoddy medical research. The point of this new piece isn’t to declare that the data on coronavirus is shoddy; the point is to declare that we just don’t have enough of it yet to feel confident about how dangerous the disease is. And that matters a lot when you’re implementing policies with massive social repercussions like shutting down the global economy and passing trillion-dollar stimuluses.

It behooves the deep state leftists (including our enemies within as well as our enemies without).... to over-hype the lethality of this virus in their quest (wet dream) to get rid of Trump by tanking the economy.... ie by any means necessary.

Personal anecdote:

Was walking from the parking lot into Petsmart the other day and this exceedingly ugly (fat, stupid, etc.) male was was coming out of Petsmart.   Out of the blue, literally, he said "Down with Trump!".   At which point I had to wonder.... do I look like a Trump supporter???   And no, no MAGA hat, t-shirt or symbol of any kind.

My immediate response was "No, "up" with Trump!".   He then claimed that the economy was tanking, the coronavirus was spreading, and Trump is "gone".   My response was..."That's not his fault".   He continued to blab along like a typical insane leftie, and I just turned back around and went into the store, ignoring him.   But the really funny part is.... not ten minutes earlier I had been telling my cousin's wife on the ride there how there are idiots out there that don't care if the nation is destroyed, or the economy ruined, etc.... as long as it translates into them getting rid of Trump (they think).   This moron proved what I had just told her.... in spades.  Ironic.  My cousin's wife was stunned.   I told her that I deal with idiots like that guy every day on the internet...lol.
No quarter given to the enemy within...ever.

It is a sickness. I literally cannot discuss the weather with some people without them burping out some criticism of the pres.

Tedious as all hell.

I think telling people under these circumstances to avoid crowds and try to stay home when practical until this passes is very reasonable.

The government forcefully shutting everything down is extreme.

There's a balance somewhere in between.

I do think the hording and general response of people not going to restaurants and the like would be pretty similar with or without government's heavy hand in it. Its what people do.

Trump and other leaders are in a no win situation. Destruction is going to happen no matter what they do. If it is perceived they didn't do enough and our hospitals go the way of Italy they will get tossed out. If few die and the hospitals are empty and there's major economic damage they will get tossed out. Not an easy road to navigate with little reliable data. And by the time the data becomes reliable it won't matter in terms of heading off the mess, it will be hindsight past when it was needed. Most of the response is just rattling around in the dark hoping for the best.

It is a sickness.

Yep.   And this guy was very obviously "sick".   I just hope it was from the leftism.... only.

The conspiracy theorists have claimed that there are "super spreaders" out there deliberately spreading the virus... for reasons that you can guess.   After witnessing the hatred first-hand like that.... I'm starting to believe it.   Just look how fast it spread here in the US.... somehow.

So it literally could turn out to be a lose-lose scenario for Trump's re-election chances.   Just as the deep state wanted.

Hmmm.....

Its good that minds so easily overtaken with irrational hate are typically too feeble to dream up such schemes.

The article does not mention "left" one time, it mentions Democrats one time in this innocuous sentence:

Just as you couldn’t get an accurate sense of public opinion about Trump by polling only Democrats or only Republicans, you can’t get an accurate sense of what’s happening with the new coronavirus by testing only the people with symptoms, especially severe symptoms.

No deep state either is mentioned.

I don't ever watch CNN, MSNBC, ABC or NBC or CBS for the most part...likewise, as saying "Orange man is bad", it's also a bit tiring to always, and some times is okay, but to always bring out something about a Democrat conspiracy, they set this up, or the deep state when this illness is on the prowl around the world and almost every nation on earth is dealing with it.

Yeah, we don't know everything about this disease.  Give the man a Nobel Prize,  what an outstanding observation.

Hey and the guy is out at Stanford, what about the standard response to just say "Oooooh, Stanford, left-winger"...
