Judge demands unredacted Mueller report, questioning Barr's 'credibility'
By Harper Neidig - 03/05/20 05:13 PM EST

A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Department of Justice to hand over to him a copy of the unredacted Mueller report and accused Attorney General William Barr of misrepresenting its findings in the days before it was submitted to Congress last year.

Judge Reggie B. Walton, a federal district court judge in Washington, said that he could not reconcile Barr's public comments in April 2019 about the report with the actual findings that Special Counsel Robert Mueller outlined.

"The inconsistencies between Attorney General Barr’s statements, made at a time when the public did not have access to the redacted version of the Mueller Report to assess the veracity of his statements, and portions of the redacted version of the Mueller Report that conflict with those statements cause the Court to seriously question whether Attorney General Barr made a calculated attempt to influence public discourse about the Mueller Report in favor of President Trump despite certain findings in the redacted version of the Mueller Report to the contrary," Walton wrote in his decision.

Judge Accuses AG Barr Of ‘Lack Of Candor,’ Orders Review Of Full Mueller Report

A federal judge on Thursday accused Attorney General William Barr of displaying a “lack of candor” regarding his public statements about the special counsel’s report on the Russia probe.

In a surprisingly harsh statement, Judge Reggie Walton ordered the Justice Department to allow him to privately review an unredacted copy of the Mueller report in order to determine whether previously redacted portions of the document can be released to the public.

Something really wrong with this.

The judge is accusing Barr of lack of candor about documents the judge hasn't even seen. That makes no sense.

Mueller was in front of congress and could have said whatever he wanted to.

Walton asserted in his memo that he does not trust Barr’s comments about the contents of the report, or his interpretations of what the special counsel concluded from its investigation into whether President Trump attempted to obstruct the Russia probe.

Walton asserted that “inconsistencies” between Barr’s public statements and what is laid out in a redacted version of the special counsel’s report “cause the Court to seriously question whether Attorney General Barr made a calculated attempt to influence public discourse about the Mueller Report in favor of President Trump.”

Walton, who was appointed to the bench in 2001 by George W. Bush, made the ruling as part of a lawsuit against the Justice Department filed by the Electronic Privacy Information Center and reporter Jason Leopold.

DOJ Responds To District Judge’s Misinterpretation Of Muller Report Redactions

Quote
Walton accused Barr of rushing a public summary of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian collusion to the public prior to its full release while keeping sections redacted omitting key information that Walton argues contributed to “a narrative that is clearly in some respects substantively at odds with the redacted version of the Mueller report.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice rejected Walton’s claims as “contrary to the facts,” and noted that the redactions made in the final report were decided in part by members of the special counsel’s own team.

“The original redactions in the public report were made by Department attorneys, in consultation with senior members of Special Counsel Mueller’s team, prosecutors in U.S. Attorney’s Offices and members of the Intelligence Community,” Department spokesperson Kerri Kupec said in a statement. “There is no basis to question the work or good faith of any of these career Department lawyers. The Department stands by their work.”

Judge Walton seems to have been uninformed - or ignored - how the Mueller Report was redacted. I'm not sure, ultimately, whether his court has the authority to review or make public classified information and/or grander jury testimony.
