Republicans who have been counting on a roaring economy to power President Trump and GOP congressional candidates on Election Day are growing nervous because of the economic havoc wreaked by the coronavirus.

Earlier this month, GOP senators were riding high after Trump’s acquittal on impeachment charges in the Senate. Now they’re wrestling with predictions of an economic slowdown that could upend the political calculus for 2020.

“There’s a potential to really affect the economy, not only this country negatively, but throughout the world,” said Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.), adding that GOP colleagues discussed the potential fallout from the coronavirus at an all-day retreat in Washington on Wednesday.

I think the GOP is recognizing not to take anything for granted. The voters understand that the markets are dropping because the world fears about a virus, it’s unlikely they’re going to blame the president

It’s weird but I think  this very thing will hurt Bernie and help some of the other candidates as well. Personally, I think all the candidates, Republicans and Democrats should be talking more about our budget, balancing our debt, etc. I suppose this will be a talking point once the final candidates are finally chosen and can really focus on issues

The last thing a bona fide socialist like Sanders will ever talk about is the budget and balancing it.  Sanders has, so far, touted spending that is multiple times the entire GDP of the country.

We are still several months out from the election.  People right now in the U.S. are panicking.  Fear and greed drive the market.  Right now the U.S. economy is still pretty solid. If between now and the election the U.S. enters a recession, the word "recession" alone will be a negative mark on Trump's record and it could hurt him.  We still don't know which socialist will win the DEM nomination, but IF people start losing their jobs, unable to make ends meet, go on to food stamps, etc., perhaps the socialist list of freebies might look pretty enticing and the socialist will capture their vote.

I'm not surprised at the selloff.  China figures pretty heavily in the supply chains of the blue chip companies.  When you have companies the size of Maersk halt shipping to and from China, it's the same as a super-longshoreman Strike.

It was also an opportunistic profit-taking event for institutional and hedge fund managers.   They can always blame computer algorithms for their antics.   But, there will be some sweet bonuses come March 31.
