For some reason or reasons I don't understand,there seem to be a lot of self-hating Jews. That doesn't keep most of them from supporting Israel when push comes to shove,though.

Nobody 'understands' it. Not even self-hating Jews themselves understand it. Daddy issues? Mommy issues? Who knows? I hear it is a common thing with many religions Catholics, Mormons, and others. But yes, there are many Israelis in Israel who are very anti-religion. It has been this way since the founding of Israel. There were two main branches of Jews: those who wanted to found a secular Socialist nation and those who wanted to found the nation on religious Judaic principles. And that divide still exists today.

As far a Schumer goes, if he was ever branded a Zionist (a person dedicated to the State of Israel) in the current antisemitic Democrat Party, that would likely be the end of his career. I have never known him to go out of his way to do anything special for Israel that he has not done for dozens of other countries in the world.

Claiming to be Jewish is a bigger issue which I will not address here. There are copious cults and persons who claim to be Jewish or to be what they call "the real Jews", who have no connection with Judaism or Israel at all. But yes. Schumer is regarded as legitimately Jewish by the Jewish Community at large and it does serve him well in the district he represents. More Jews live in NYC than anywhere else on Earth.

Well,most people tend to claim/identify with the religion of their parents,regardless of if they are devout or not. It's just a "background thing".

There was a Russian Jewish Exodus to Israel late 90s early 2000s. Russian is spoken by a large segment of the Israeli population. There are entire city blocks, entire communities, in Israel which are almost all Russians.

The Jewish population of Russia was once massive. Now, it is minor minority primarily because of persecution. Why suffer through Russian nonsense when Israel is waiting with welcoming arms?

Most/maybe everybody I know that is "casual" about religion don't routinely act in opposition to religious beliefs. There are truly devout believers,and there are "out and loud about it atheists",but it seems like the vast majority of the people I have met have been somewhere in the middle.

Thanks for reminding me. Now that you mention it,that is one of the things I used to know about.

I still have no idea why so many Jews originally immigrated to Russia,though. Couldn't have been for the temperate climate or the free market business opportunities under either the Czars or the commies.
