Daredevil "Mad Mike" Hughes died Saturday (Feb. 22) during his latest attempt to launch into the sky on a homemade rocket powered by steam.

Hughes, 64, was attempting to launch 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) into the air from a location near Barstow, California, in a rocket he built with partner Waldo Stakes. The Science Channel, which was filming the launch attempt as part of the future documentary series "Homemade Astronauts," confirmed Hughes' death to Space.com.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time," Science Channel representatives said in a statement. "It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science was there to chronicle his journey."

Mike Huges, the self-taught rocket scientist and self-avowed  flat-Earth conspiracy theorist, died Saturday morning (Feb. 22) during an attempt to launch a homemade rocket outside Barstow in San Bernardino County, California, according to news reports.

"Mad Mike," as he called himself, was attempting to reach an altitude of 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) Saturday. He rode his rocket into the sky, but something went wrong and as he rocketed into the air on top of a column of steam, a green parachute seemed to rip off from the rocket, as seen in a video posted to Twitter by freelance journalist Justin Chapman; Hughes then fell to his death, said Darren Shuster, his public relations representative, as reported by the LA Times.

Flat-Earth theorist “Mad” Mike Hughes died Saturday after launching himself in a homemade rocket that crashed into the ground.

The rocket carrying Hughes, 64, crashed on private property near Barstow, California.

“It was unsuccessful, and he passed away,” longtime colleague Waldo Stakes told the Associated Press.

A video of the launch posted by freelance journalist Justin Chapman showed a parachute falling away from the rocket, then the rocket falling down shortly after takeoff.

He could have done his stunt in a Cessna 150 a lot safer and gotten to a higher altitude...….

The landing would have been a tad smoother too.
