Republicans urging GOP voters to vote for Sanders in South Carolina primary: report
By Marty Johnson - 02/04/20 05:45 PM EST

State Republican leaders in South Carolina are urging GOP voters to vote for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the state's Feb. 29 Democratic primary.

The plan – orchestrated by Greenville GOP chairman Nate Leupp and several other prominent Republican Party leaders – revolves around GOP leadership's belief that Sanders poses the least amount of challenge to President Trump in November's general election and its goal of getting the Palmetto State's Democratic lawmakers to agree to close the state's primaries.

“Bernie Sanders is the most socialistic, liberal candidate running in the Democratic presidential preference primary,” Leupp told The Post and Courier. “So we feel we can make a strong point that our Democratic state legislators need to help work to close our primaries so it protects them as well as the Republican brand.”

Not a bad idea in my opinion.

A poor showing by Biden in S.C. would probably drive him out of the race.

Just a note of caution....

This is the same game that the democrats played going into 2016.  They were sure Trump was the most easily defeated candidate in the crowd, and their crossover support contributed to his early vote totals that help him pull away from the field.  Now I don't think Sanders will ever beat Trump, but I also didn't think Trump was going to beat Hillary.  So these things don't always work out as planned.  It certainly didn't for the democrats in 2016.

I agree with this.   I understand the rationale behind these hijinks,  but, as you say, the future is unwritten.   A dangerous socialist like Sanders (or Warren) should by no means be on the ballot in November.    This election is going to be close because Trump will bring out the Dem base in droves.   There are scenarios under which Sanders could win.

@Jazzhead

I agree,primarily because it gives far-left whackos political credibility,and they will be taken seriously in future elections. Keeping them in the "kook" category is a MUCH safer policy to follow.

Take Butt Plug for example. He wins in Iowa,and suddenly it is accepted that homosexuals are mainstream candidates.

Certainly there are scenarios where other candidates could win against Trump.

We sit in here day after day reading about the progress and accomplishments that Trump has made and the errors and obstruction from the left.

People need to keep in mind that the average Joe Public (especially liberals) only hear and see what is being proclaimed by the MSM.  Trump re-election is not for certain and hopefully the RNC, GOP and the Trump voting base do NOT take his re-election for granted.  Heck, there are members in here who still can't see any good in the man.

Even as a strategic move...I would break down in tears when they stamped my registration card with a "D".

My feeling is this:  no matter which Democrat gets in there, the institutional pressure from the progressives and their Supreme Court nominees will push that Administration and the country towards the left anyway.  At least Bernie is honest about what he believes -- the rest will try to accomplish the same things but trying to pretend they're really something else.  So I'd prefer the voters have a clear choice about the direction in which the country should go rather than letting another Dem masquerade as a moderate for the general election.

tl;dr I don't think Bernie would actually be any worse as a President than any of the rest, so there's nothing to lose.
