Passenger arrives at LAX with possible coronavirus symptoms

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A passenger who landed at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday night was hospitalized for a precautionary medical evaluation amid increased concerns over coronavirus.

ABC News reports it's unclear if the passenger, who arrived on Flight 2436 from Mexico City, has coronavirus or what symptoms were exhibited.

Chinese state media cited local health authorities in the XUAR as saying that a 47-year-old man identified by the surname Li and a 52-year-old man identified as Gu had been confirmed infected by the novel coronavirus (nCoV) as of 6:00 p.m. local time on Thursday. Both had been to Hubei’s capital Wuhan, where the virus is believed to have been first transmitted to humans, they said.

The two were among the latest confirmed cases of the virus, which the official China Central Television (CCTV) said had infected nearly 650 people, including 10 people in the U.S., Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Vietnam. At least 18 people have died in the outbreak, all within China.

The Chinese market at the center of the deadly coronavirus outbreak sold live animals — including wolf pups, foxes, rats and peacocks — to eat, according to a new report.

The wild animals were among 112 items that were peddled at the Huanan Seafood Market in the central city of Wuhan, Agence France-Press reported.

Other wildlife sold at the market, which has since been shuttered, included crocodiles, giant salamanders, snakes, porcupines and camel meat.

“Freshly slaughtered, frozen and delivered to your door,” said the price list for the vendor, “Wild Game Animal Husbandry for the Masses.”

A second US case of deadly coronavirus has been confirmed, this time in Illinois

The deadly coronavirus has afflicted another person in the United States, health officials confirmed Friday, bringing the total number of U.S. cases to two as Chinese health officials scramble to contain the outbreak.

A Chicago woman returned Jan. 13 from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, and began experiencing symptoms a few days after arriving home, said the city's health officials.

The 60-year-old woman called her doctor after symptoms arose and she was admitted to a hospital and placed in isolation, health officials said. Further testing confirmed the virus.

Hospitalized Woman in New Jersey Does Not Have Coronavirus

The Hackensack University Medical center confirmed that the patient hospitalized in Hackensack, New Jersey does not have a new coronavirus that first broke out in China.

“After an evaluation of the patient and consulting with the State Department of Health, experts have determined the patient does not have the Wuhan Coronavirus. Due to patient privacy, we are unable to provide additional information,” the hospital said in a statement.

According to NorthJersey.com, the patient is a 25-year-old woman who was brought to a hospital in Hackensack by the Edgewater Emergency Medical Services on Thursday night.

One of the stories says one of the top medical authorities in Wuhan is infected.  Then, this one says new symptoms, I thought they'd say something about "nerves" which some people are speculating on but this is just typical, diarrhea, chest pains, those kinds of things, fever, typical for the flu in most cases.

Thus far, official guidance on the symptoms of the Wuhan virus has been limited to fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as coughing, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.

However, according to local media a report by doctors and experts from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University on Friday noted the appearance of initial symptoms not related to the respiratory system.

U.S. health experts predicted a strain of the coronavirus could kill tens of millions of people in a warning three months BEFORE the deadly outbreak in Wuhan, China.

Scientists at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security modeled a hypothetical pandemic on a computer as part of research last October — their simulation predicted the deaths of some 65 million people worldwide in just 18 months. 

According to latest reports coming out of China, the highly contagious disease has so far killed 41 people and infected around 1,300 others — but experts believe China is hiding the true figures–predicting the true number of those infected to be in the many thousands.

To their credit, China’s response has been swift, shutting down more than 14 cities around Wuhan–the central metropolis where the outbreak is originated:

“We don’t yet know how contagious it is. We know that it is being spread person to person, but we don’t know to what extent.”

Dr Toner’s computer simulation back in October suggested that after six months, nearly every country in the world would have cases of coronavirus. And within 18 months, 65 million people would have died.
