Caravan of hundreds from Honduras heads to US border

Hundreds of people from Honduras have begun heading toward the U.S. border, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Coming from the city of San Pedro Sula, the effort by the migrants appears to mirror those who formed a caravan and reached the U.S. border in 2018, according to the AP.

Some are hitching rides while hundreds are hiking in groups, waving flags, and shouting against President Juan Orlando Hernández as they head for the Guatemalan border.

"We aren't living here, we're just surviving," Elmer García, 26, a migrant from the town of Comayagua, told the AP. "So it doesn't make much difference if you die there or die here."

This appears to be the caravan that the article in this thread, http://www.gopbriefingroom.com/index.php/topic,388187.0.html , said was coming. As indicated by the "migrant" quoted, these people are not refugees. They're just trying to move away from the poverty of their country.

Around 1,000 people have gathered in the city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, this week to organize a new migrant caravan bound for the U.S.

Bartolo Fuentes, a journalist and activist confirmed the news of the gathering caravan to AFP on Tuesday. Fuentes said, “Right now we’re close to 1,000 people but there are buses arriving from different parts of the country.”

Fuentes said many of the people were alerted to the gathering migrant caravan through social media posts. He said many of those caravan participants came from rural areas.

“Here there’s no work for anyone. I was studying … but for nothing because there are many graduates with the diploma under their arm but without finding work,” 28-year-old Yoly Sabillon told AFP reporters.

Guatemala's new president on Wednesday faced an early test of his ability to manage migration as a caravan of hundreds of people left Honduras for the United States, and said Mexico would halt its progress.

President Alejandro Giammattei inherited a contentious deal that his predecessor's government struck with Washington designed to make migrants from Honduras and El Salvador seek asylum in Guatemala rather than the United States.

Giammattei met with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard early on Wednesday, and later told reporters that Mexico was determined to halt the caravan's advance....
