Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander threatens attacks on 'vital' US destroyers, warships

By Paulina Dedaj | Fox News

A senior military official in Iran threatened an attack on some 35 “American targets,” including “destroyers and warships” near the Persian Gulf Friday night, promising to seek revenge for the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, according to a report.

The latest threat against the U.S. came late Friday night from senior Revolutionary Guards commander Gen. Gholamali Abuhamzeh, a day after top Iranian military general Soleimani was wiped out by an airstrike at Baghdad International Airport.

Abuhamzeh, commander of the Revolutionary Guards in the southern province of Kerman, foreshadowed a possible attack on “vital American targets” located in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation of Soleimani’s death.

Pro-Iran Lebanese outlets reshare 1983 Beirut bombings photo, vow repeat attacks

Photo showing a destruction of a building during the 1983 Hezbollah attack on a US Marines compound in Beirut and a header titled the “Great War of Liberation.” (Photo via al-Akhbar's front page)

Ismaeel Naar, Al Arabiya English Tuesday, 7 January 2020

Several pro-Iranian media outlets and journalists have been sharing a photo showing the funeral caskets of US Marines killed in Beirut in 1983 alongside hashtags calling for revenge and a repeat of the attack.

Pro-Hezbollah newspaper al-Akhbar ran a special focus page marking the assassination of Iranian top commander Qassem Soleimani on Friday - on its website with the main photo showing the destruction of a building during the 1983 attack in Beirut and a header titled the “Great War of Liberation.”

“Because there is no leader in America that reaches Soleimani's ‘shoes’, the Secretary General of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah, in his memorial address about the martyrs of the American raid, announced that they would pay a price for their its presence in the region. In the name of the resistance axis, its soldiers and officers deployed in the countries of the region are assured to return to their country in coffins,” al-Akhbar’s lede editorial read.

That was terrible and happened while Reagan was President. I can't fathom how the press would react today if something like that Beirut bombings occurred... BUT the problem with Beirut was, the security let someone with a car bomb come in and blow the place up.  We didn't have good security, the UN or whomever, did not plan it properly.  It was not, from what I know, the US's fault.

US VP Pence to lay out Iran policy in upcoming speech: White House
Reuters, Washington Tuesday, 7 January 2020

US Vice President Mike Pence will give a speech next Monday laying out the government’s policy on Iran, a White House official said, after the US killing of a top Iranian general sparked protests across the Middle Eastern nation.

Pence will make the remarks at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ National Security Summit in Washington, and is expected to focus on differences between the Iranian people and their government, the official said, declining to offer further details on content and speaking on condition of anonymity.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have heightened since a US drone strike killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani at the Baghdad airport on Friday.

The "cultural sites" kerfuffle:

Quote
"They're allowed to kill our people. They're allowed to torture and maim our people. They're allowed to use roadside bombs and blow up our people," he said.

"And we're not allowed to touch their cultural sites? It doesn't work that way."

The targeted killing of Soleimani divided people in the Middle East, with some in Iraq and Syria celebrating the death of the commander, who had been instrumental in the Syrian war that has resulted in hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths.

Articles also say both Bush and Obama passed over dealing with Soleimani because of the backlash. I wonder if dealing with him in a more clandestine way might have been better. Did we have to announce it to the world? The guy was evil, I knew who he was.

US forces on high alert for possible Iranian drone attacks, and intelligence shows Iran moving military equipment
By Barbara Starr, CNN Pentagon Correspondent

Updated 4:05 PM ET, Tue January 7, 2020
US forces on high alert for possible Iran drone attacks

Washington (CNN)US forces and air-defense missile batteries across the Middle East were placed on high alert overnight Monday to possibly shoot down Iranian drones as intelligence mounted about a threat of an imminent attack against US targets, two US officials tell CNN.

The alert reflects the heightened tensions between the US and Iran in the wake of last week's US drone strike that killed a top Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani. US officials have claimed the strike against the general was carried out to prevent an "imminent" attack in the region that would have put American lives at risk, but have so far declined to provide details about the intelligence.

US intelligence also has observed Iran moving military equipment, including drones and ballistic missiles, over the last several days. US officials said the movement may be an Iranian effort to secure its weapons from a potential US strike, or put them in positions to launch their own attacks.

Significant, before Fox and other cable/satellite outfits, I'd grade high some of their coverage as good, the first Gulf War; but it's hard to compare now and then and whatever biases they had though, Amanapour has been called an "Iran apologist", sounds accurate to me.

Soleimani was at the helm of that attack, along with the Khobar Towers bombing, and the embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. The guy got around, and alot of people were maimed or killed because of him. Good riddance.

BREAKING:  10 rockets hit airbase in Iraq where US troops are located

t least 10 rockets hit al-Asad airbase in Iraq, which houses US forces, a Sunni commander of the paramilitary forces in a nearby town told CNN.
Qatri al-Obeidi, a commander in the nearby town of al-Baghdadi, said that the shelling has stopped for now. President Donald Trump visited the base in December 2018 to visit troops after Christmas. Vice President Mike Pence also visited the base in November 2019. The attack follows last week's deadly US drone strike that Trump ordered to kill key Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
Iranian state TV reported that the Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, "has hit U.S. Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq with tens of missiles." The IRGC warned the US of of more "crushing responses in case of new aggression," according to state TV. The IRGC said it will target any regional state that becomes a platform for US aggression, a second banner on state TV read.
CNN reported earlier on Tuesday that US forces and air-defense missile batteries across the Middle East were placed on high alert overnight Monday to possibly shoot down Iranian drones as intelligence mounted about a threat of an imminent attack against US targets, according to two US officials.....

Missiles were fired early Wednesday in multiple locations across Iraq, a senior U.S. military source in the country told Fox News, describing it as a series of attacks on U.S. forces from Iran.
The source told Fox News' Jennifer Griffin: "Under missile attack from Iran. These are either cruise missiles or short-range ballistic missiles. All over the country." The missiles struck near Al Assad Air Base in Anbar, among other locations. There was no immediate word on injuries or damage.
Meantime, Iran state TV claimed Tehran launched "tens" of surface-to-surface missiles at Iraq's Ain Assad air base housing U.S. troops.

In meeting tonight Speaker Pelosi was handed a note telling her VP Pence was on the phone.

“Tell him I’ll call him back,” she said according to sources in room, noting she had to go open the House for new session.

Two minutes later, she was handed note about air base bombing.

According to reliable sources, Iran has outlined *seven* retaliatory attack scenarios sanctioned by the Iranian leadership. Tonight's attack will apparently pale in comparison to these other far more destructive attacks Iran will launch if there is a US response.

@TomSea

IIRC,there were USMC guards at the gate, and besides their standard rifles, there was a 50 caliber M-2 there.

The problem was a lack of experience (being polite) by the senior man at the gate due to the Rules of Engagement laid out by the senior Jarhead, who didn't want anything to happen that he could be blamed for,and harm his career.

For those of you who don't know,in the military the "Rules of Engagement" can vary wildly from one duty post to another, but are USUALLY used as a guideline for when NOT to shoot, and any Marine or soldier who violates the rules of engagement can be arrested and charged with murder if he or she kills someone. Even if they don't kill anyone they can be court-martialed for a whole series of infractions.

Usually this means the guards might as well be asleep because they won't even shoot if shot at unless some officer gives them the ok,and officers are generally scarce on the ground around gates/check points. Make the right decisions, you are a hero. Make the wrong decision, and you will be put on trial for murder.

IF the senior man on duty, who may well have been a 20 year old Corporal with NO experience other than theoretical, and you can't really blame him for not lighting up the truck with the 50 cal. Especially if you take into consideration that these were the VERY "early days"  of Islamic aggression this time around. Yeah, they were guards, but they didn't really have the mindset you would see on guards guarding a gate in the Muddle East today. Today's guards WILL light your ass UP! if you seem to be crashing the gate. We are not as innocent today as we used to be.
