The 2016 Electoral College Map: A Template for 2020

Seth Moskowitz, Guest Columnist January 2nd, 2020

KEY POINTS FROM THIS ARTICLE

— In 2016, Hillary Clinton would have needed to flip 38 additional Electoral College votes to reach 270[1], thereby winning a majority in the Electoral College.

— Using 2016 presidential election results, we can map out the different paths that Clinton had to winning 270 electoral votes. These routes — and how far Clinton was from winning them — give us a template for how presidential candidates might plan their strategies for this November’s election.

— Flipping Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin is likely Democrats’ best chance at winning back the presidency. But last election’s results reveal other paths to 270 for Democrats (like Florida and Arizona) that were competitive in 2016 and could be decisive this November.

— Republicans have a few pickup opportunities — most notably New Hampshire — that could tip a close election in their favor.

Biden has not collapsed in the primary, but his general election numbers have gone from landslide to narrow victory.  He is around 2.4% stronger than Hillary in the popular vote ... that translates to close wins in the swing states, which is consistent with the state level polls over the past month.

Hurts to say this, but it looks like Mr. Trump will once again be "the underdog" in the upcoming election.

I hope he can pull the rabbit out of the hat a second time.

A Biden/leftist female VP presidency will be an outright disaster for the country. Perhaps it may even accelerate my "American Timeline":
2019: USA -- United States of America
2027: USSA -- United Socialist States of America
2035: USSSA -- United Soviet Socialist States of America
2042:  ?????

I think there are millions of others out there like me who couldn't stand Trump, but will crawl to the polling place this time, if need be.
