Two days before Christmas on an orange-lit sunset evening, Brenda Von Kanel cried happy tears at the surprising sight in her front yard.
She stood on her porch with her husband, Rick, surrounded by their friends from Faithbridge Church, their children, grandchildren and neighbors. Everyone held candles and sheets of paper with lyrics to a few Yuletide carols.
This could be Von Kanel’s last Christmas, so her family wanted to do something different. Since she is programmed to do for others at the holidays, her family decided to bring the cheer to her doorstep.
Von Kanel is four months into the initial six-month prognosis that doctors gave her after she was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in August. It has since metastasized to her liver, Robinson said. Just a few hours before the surprising caroling, Von Kanel returned from a chemotherapy session.
