MEXICO CITY, Dec 7 -- Chief executive of Mexican state oil company Pemex, Octavio Romero Oropeza, announced on Friday the discovery of a giant crude oil deposit in the southeastern Mexican state of Tabasco with the confirmed crude oil reserves equivalent to 500 million barrels, Russia’s Sputnik news agency reported.

"We can confirm the existence of a giant deposit equivalent to 500 million barrels of crude oil in a 3P reserve," Romero Oropeza said as quoted by Financiero newspaper.

According to him, the well drilling works have already started and the company plans to extract up to 69,000 barrels per day from the site next year.

The mismanagement of the largest oil field in North America, Cantarell in Mexico, is truly staggering.

The absence of remedial procedures to arrest the blowdown of the gas cap is a normal practice in the petroleum world to extend the oil production and reserves of oil fields and prevent irreparable loss of oil.  Yet Mexico produced the field for 20 years before this reservoir management was introduced.

There is a reason why oilfield professionals from the Western World are utilized in successful management of many of the world's largest oilfields.

Mexico decided to go at it alone for pride and the country has paid the cost.
