"Return to Me" by Dean Martin. My mother used to swoon when this came on the radio. I get it now.

@PeteS in CA

About 3 days ago I was listening to and singing along with this exact video. What are the chances? I couldn't remember all the words and was on my way to find them when I started listening to other songs by The Village Stompers and observed that modulation seems to be a trademark in all their recordings. Got sidetracked and forgot to search for the words until you posted this vid! Thanks!

From Cape Cod Light to the Mississip', to San Francisco Bay
They're talkin' 'bout this famous place, down Greenwich Village way
They hootenanny all the time with folks from everywhere
Come Sunday morning, rain or shine, right in Washington Square

An' so I got my banjo out, jes' sittin', catchin' dust
An' painted right across the case: "Greenwich Village or Bust!"
My folks were sad to see me go, but I got no meanin' there
So I said, "Goodbye, Kansas, Mo. And hello, Washington Square!"

Near Tennessee, I met a guy who played 12-string guitar
He also had a mighty voice, not to mention a car
Each time he hit those bluegrass chords, you sure smelled mountain air
I said, "Don't waste it on the wind. C'mon to Washington Square."

In New Orleans, we saw a gal a-walkin' with no shoes
An' from her throat there comes a growl, she sure was singin' the blues
She sang for all humanity, this gal with raven hair
I said, "It's for the world to hear, C'mon to Washington Square."

We cannonballed into New York on good old US 1
Till up ahead we saw the arch, a-gleamin' bright in the sun
As far as all the eye could see, ten thousand folks was there
And singin' in sweet harmony right in Washington Square

Say how's about a freedom song, or the ole' "Rock Island Line"!
Or how's about the dust-bowl crop, or men who work in a mine?
The songs and legends of our land is gold we all can share
So come and join us folks who stand and sing in Washington Square

A lot of what Mancini did, he wrote... I was listening a few months ago to him. Some of his work makes me think he was indeed a musical genius which we rarely if ever will see again. Yes, this is very good. Thanks. @AllThatJazzZ

One of the comments does say he wrote this.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

English translation:

Embrace me,
and don't say anything, just embrace me,
Your look is enough for me to understand,
that you will go away.

Embrace me,
As if this is the first time,
As if you love me today like you did before,
Embrace me.

If you go away,
You will remember that one day some time ago,
When we were still kids, you started to love me,
And I gave you my life, if you go away.

If you go away,
Then nothing you have will be ours,
In a single moment, an eternity,
And I will be left without anything, if you go away.

Embrace me,
and don't say anything, just embrace me,
Your look is enough for me to understand,
that you will go away.

Embrace me,
As if this is the first time,
As if you love me today like you did yesterday,
Embrace me.

If you go away,
Only silence will be left for me to talk with,
The shadow of your body and loneliness
They will be my companions, if you go away.

If you go away,
You will take the time and my best age away with you,
I will love you more each passing day,
I will be waiting for you to return, if you go away.

I mainly associate Ralph Carmichael - I won't claim to be familiar with his work - with Christian music. Here is W'pedia's bio page on him, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Carmichael . Apparently he is still alive, age 92. Besides working with Nat King Cole, he also, "wrote arrangements for many other top performers, including Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Jack Jones, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Al Martino and Roger Williams. He arranged most of the carols on the 1961 Stan Kenton album A Merry Christmas!."

Carmichael also founded Light Records and brought on Andrae' Crouch and the Disciples. From 1972:

This is so Kennedy era, even how she's dressed, pretty classy, oh and that's Peter Fonda too, in this 1963 movie. She was an interesting one, hailing from Bayonne. I knew someone, in fact, from Bolivia. She was named Jackie, Jacqueline.. and I figured to myself, I'll bet she was born during the Kennedy presidency.

@TomSea

This was a surprise. I didn't know Sandra Dee sang. I assumed she lipsynched the song that someone else sang (a la Natalie Wood in "West Side Story"). For me, Debbie Reynolds will always be Tammy, just as Sandra Dee will always be Gidget.

Speaking of Gidget...

I have this record in my collection of 45s (which is considerable). I guess I've played it a zillion times over the decades because I can still sing every note, word and even the musical interludes. I have no idea what I had for breakfast this morning, though.

And since you mentioned it, here's this:

Henry Mancini plays the wonderful, haunting Michel Legrand piece, "The Windmills of your Mind." (Lyrics by Marilyn & Alan Bergman)

The best performance of this song I ever heard was by the King Sisters who, many years ago, had a rather short-lived TV show IIRC. Their harmony and the arrangement left me mesmerized. I would love to hear that version again.
