At 10, Ricky Rodriguez knows more English words than do adults many years his senior.

It’s evident on Sunday afternoons at his standing Scrabble date with Pat Griffith, 86.

For Griffith, the Sunday sessions are an opportunity for her to challenge herself, socialize with a young person and learn a few new words. For Ricky, it’s practice for his biggest stage yet: the World English Language Scrabble Players Association youth cup in Malaysia.

That’s a world championship, in other words, and it starts today. Ricky is one of three Americans competing in a field of 200 kids.

It was only last year that Ricky joined the San Antonio Scrabble Club, whose members taught him the rules of competition and encouraged his mom to start taking him to tournaments. He’s also spent a year in training with Cornelia Guest, who’s been a Scrabble coach for 15 years.
