Activists, former prisoners see advance as social-justice victory, since losing right to vote disproportionately affects African Americans in New Jersey

The Legislature took a major step toward extending the right to vote to people on probation and parole, when the Assembly on Monday passed a bill that does not go quite as far as advocates had hoped but would return about 80,000 New Jerseyans to the voter rolls.

It took 21 months for the effort to end New Jersey’s prohibition on voting for anyone still serving any part of a criminal sentence, which activists characterized as a civil rights issue when announcing it in February 2018. It was a newly introduced bill (A-5823) that passed during this lame duck session. Left out of that bill, and part of the original push, are those who are still incarcerated.

@Gefn

Code for "We need the black criminal vote to stay in power."

And people wonder why all the cities in NJ are mostly 3rd world cess pools.

 This is America. People are SUPPOSED to have all their rights restored to them AFTER serving their sentences,but NOT while they are on parole or probation. It used to be that the prison officials would hand your guns back to you as you left prison after serving your sentence,and it should STILL  be that way because once again,this IS America,and you will have served your sentence for the crime you were convicted of committing.

But,once again,this has nothing to do with justice or rights. It's all about getting the felon votes for Dim candidates while maintaining the state of anarchy they need to remain in power.

@sneakypete it’s also that people are leaving the state for warmer climes and people who are staying are loudly voicing how ticked off they are with the higher taxes, the fact that the political system wants to change the gas stations to self serve from full service, it’s now against the law to run your car for more than three minutes in park unless you are stuck in a traffic jam but you can’t have it idle in park with the engine on in the winter to clean snow off the windows or you face having a $250 fine. Ridiculous things like that.

So there are a lot of people saying they will vote out their local representatives next year. Which has them scared because the state could go purple or (horrors) red. So this is a quick fix to make sure the state stays blue. No matter what the cost.

Which is scary because not only do these people vote, my understanding is they will be eligible for jury duty as well. And big cities like Trenton and Camden and Newark are already going to ruin, and some other cities are starting to turn.

Believe me, if I didn’t have family here I’d be looking at other states too.

@Gefn

Which means that no Muslim will ever be convicted of anything in NJ unless it is in a Sharia court.
